Paharpur Bihar is the only archaeological site in Bangladesh that we found as special. During day time it is over run by locals trying to destroy the site by climbing on the stupa, etc. Some organization has given less than $100,000 to "restore" this historic site. It needs about 100 times more money and real expertise in Archaeology to restore this world heritage site. Staying in the guest house is the only way to soak the magic during twilight and early in the morning. I need to write about the review that said the staff are super unfriendly, etc. This place gets filled by "officials" almost all the time. You must call ahead to make sure it is available. The number Lonely Planet gives you is of the former Director who is no longer working there but he answered the phone and arranged our stay there by talking to the current Director. I do speak Bengali but it is not necessary to make the arrangement. The reviewer who was told it was full did not understand their broken English. It was indeed full. The kind gentleman who took him to his home stay took my husband and me to his home as well and explained the entire situation to me. It was easy because I speak his language. The home stay is expensive for what it is but you will get an idea about how most of the locals live. We stayed in the guest house, got very warm welcome. Fancy is the name of the caretaker and she speaks English well enough for everyone to understand. She is also a very good cook. Our room had air conditioner. Although electricity was on and off and there was no hot water in the bathroom, no wifi either, we really enjoyed our stay. If you do not speak Bengali, ask someone who does and once you call and make sure you will have a room to stay, you will be happy. Please do remember, it is rural Bangladesh and you will not get all the creature comfort. The stupa itself is fascinating. Walking around the perimeter in twilight and then again before sunrise was a fabulous experience.

We found one review on tripadvisor for this hotel, and it's mentioned in the out-of-date LP Bangladesh guide book, so we decided to go for it. It sounded nice to be able to stay right at the site in semi-rural surroundings. We had planned to arrive mid-afternoon but this being Bangladesh transportation took much longer and we arrived at 4:50. The site closes at 5:00, but the pushy woman at the ticket desk wouldn't let us go in to the director's office inside the museum unless we paid the entrance fee (200 taka, about $4, which isn't much I suppose but it's high for Bangladesh). The director was super unfriendly. He didn't speak much English but he made it very clear that the rest house was only available with prior permission and we weren't welcome to stay. I'm not at all sure what the procedure is to get permission. So there we were at dusk with no place to stay. We were trying to figure out how to get back to Jaipurhat, the nearest town, although it seemed like a small place and we figured the hotels there were probably pretty dire. A friendly guy who seemed to be on staff came up to us, and was apologetic about the reception we had received, and the fact that we had been forced to buy expensive tickets that we couldn't use. He arranged a home stay in the nearby village of Maloncha. There is an organized home stay program there, although I use the word organized quite loosely. It's run by Mohammed Hasan, a very friendly guy who speaks good English. The accommodation isn't much (you get a room in their small house and that's about it), but they were really nice people. It's a bit costly at 500 taka (about $10) per person - for one person it's a reasonable price, for two people it's expensive. His wife prepared a nice meal for an extra 100 taka per person, and breakfast is included. Mohammed took us on a night time walk around the ruins which was quite nice.
