This was my favorite location by far. You have to know going in that this is not a hotel or resort but a unique experience you will not have anywhere else. Information to know – Tea is the owner and very easy to communicate with. She answered all of our questions before we submitted payment via wire from our bank. We used email and WhatsApp to communicate throughout the process and while on the island. Here is a bit of an overview of our stay. You will take the ferry from the airport to the town of Vaitape where you will meet Joel who will walk you over to the local market (Chin Lee) to buy groceries for your stay. It’s actually a very good market with a good selection of cheese, snacks, alcohol (no sales on Sunday so keep that in mind), meat (if you get there early as fresh items do run out), and veggies. Pretty much anything you need they should have. Joel will take you in his boat to the island which is about a 15-minute ride. Joel and his wife, Tatiana, live on the island as well and there are about five additional homes on the island, but since you have the whole south end we never felt as there were people around at all. Joel and Tatiana are very friendly and only speak French so I used WhatsApp with Google Translator to communicate with them which worked great. I should note that the Wi-Fi and Internet were great as long as you are in the outdoor center room. The internet speed was actually really good and we were able to stream video. There are three main buildings - two bedrooms which each have a full bathroom (warm enough to shower but not hot water) nice size bed with mosquito netting, deck (one room had an outside shower and the other had a hose), and can be locked if needed, and one open air kitchen/living room which is amazing. The outdoor room is the best with several couches a large center table and the kitchen. There is not a dining table but there is a great gazebo a few meters away with a table and benches if you want a more formal seating area. The kitchen is actually well stocked with a hutch that had dishes, glasses, and all needed utensils. There is a four-burner small gas stove which worked for all our needs (there is also an oven but we did not use it), a full-size refrigerator, but no freezer. There is not a BBQ however there is an open fire pit that you can use to cook (when made chicken and lamb chops on it), but I would highly recommend buying some charcoal at the store as starting a fire with the wood and materials available was challenging. There is power and plugs throughout all three buildings and so you can charge your equipment, there are lights at night and for oscillating fans to cool you down at night. One issue we ran into is the power is a bit inconsistent. What we figured out is that there is a battery system that is charged during the day using solar and wind, and at night there is a generator that Joel starts up to keep you going until about 10 or so, then the batteries are used to keep lights/fans on at night. However, if there is not enough sun or if you use to much power it will run out and the system will go down for extended times during the night which can make it a bit warm without the fan running so our recommendation is make sure to turn off everything when not in use, charge your phone, camera, etc. during the window when the generator is running, and do not use items like blow dryers, etc. The highlight is the beach and the amazing views from every corner of the property. There is a kayak and snorkel gear you can use (kayak is heavy and made for sea use so not for casual users). Also, there is a 12’ aluminum boat with an 8 HP motor that Joel can setup for you to take trips back to Vaitape if needed. There is a reef around the island so Joel will show the path to make sure you can get in an out OK. We used the boat with no issues and docked back in town to spend the day. The boat cannot be used when there is bad weather or when it is dark so plan accordingly. If you do need to go to the main island at night you can schedule with Joel and for a fee he can take you in and back. There are mosquitoes and we highly recommend you spray yourself throughout the day to minimize bites. In the open area it is actually not bad bug wise especially when there is wind and you also can lite several of the citronella coils. I did get bit several times on my ankles while in the kitchen area so be vigilant and spray up. Overall, I would say this was the most relaxing, unique, beautiful and special place we stayed in our two-week, six island vacation in French Polynesia. As long as you can cook, clean, and take care of yourself, and can live with bugs, be frugal on your power usage and live without A/C I cannot recommend this place higher.
