Our 100th visit!

Hawksbill is situated in an idyllic setting, right on the shore, with four beautiful beaches, the last of which is a nude beach. That may sound sleazy to some. It is not. Where else in the world could you find a beautiful sandy beach (aptly named Eden beach) stretching for about a mile, where your nearest 2-legged neighbours might be about 50 yards away, but your nearest 4-legged neighbours will be families of pigs wallowing in the shallows, or herds of goats or flocks of sheep passing behind you in the undergrowth?That was what attracted us when first we came in the 1980s, and its unique charm has drawn us back, sometimes with our family of 17 including grandchildren before they introduced an 'adults only' policy [though 'adults' is pretty liberally interpreted as including teenagers]. In the 36+ years that we have been visiting, the hotel has had its ups and downs. Fairly recently, the owners have engaged Caribbean Cottages as managers, and the difference has been startling. Major improvements, including a new area with an infinity pool, and an ex tension of catering facilities, which have been much better in both quality and variety [though the food is wholesome rather than gourmet] have been implemented. The staff have always been one of its main assets, and the present staff universally are smiling at you and the world. The guests [it has, we are told, the hghest proportion of repeat guests on the island] function more like a country house party than a disparate set of indivduals. Obviously, we are biased - our 100th visit was celebrated in splendid style by the hotel and assorted dignitaries - nut we would not be commenting like this if we did not feel it. Hawksbill is an unusual and exceptional place - not pretentious but totally genuine.
