After visiting the centre of Oudenaarde we crossed the lift bridge over the Scheldt River (at the end of Tussenbruggen) to have a look at some interesting buildings on the right bank: the House de Lalaing and the Gothic Revival Palace of Justice to the left of the bridge, the Church of Our Lady of Pamele and Maagdendale Abbey to the right.

Today little remains of the huge Cistercian Maagdendale Abbey, which was founded in the 13th century. The complex encompassed a church, nun's quarters, a chapter house, a refectory, kitchens, a library, an abbess’s house with guest quarters, an infirmary, a brewery and a gatehouse with guest quarters. The abbey was damaged during a French bombardment in 1684 and during the French Revolution. The side choirs of the church were demolished in 1719 and the side aisles in 1745. In modern times, the straightening of the Scheldt River in 1960s led to the further loss of several outbuildings.

Still standing and beautifully restored are the gatehouse, the red and white abbess’s house and the white adjoining church. The stunning façade of the abbess’s house has two large rounded gateways. The one to the left, leading to the abbess’s quarters, is decorated with a large relief representing a Madonna with child and a kneeling man. Probably a saint, but we had no idea who it might be. The building now houses the Municipal Archives and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and doesn’t seem open to the public. On a Saturday in August we found the church also closed. A pity, we were dying to have a look inside.

The Abbey “Maagdendale” was built in 1234, this near the Church “Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Pamele church.
The Abbey was one of the most important Abbey´s for woman in the Flanders, on this moment are still existing the Abbey church who dates from the 13th century, an “Abdissen” house from the 17th Century and a gate house from 1621. The Abbey has got allot of problems in 1684 when the French were bombardments from the French army during the French Revolution.
On this moment the cite is remodelled and is occupied by the academy of arts and the city archive.
And also the old houses are taken care of too rebuilt them as social houses.
From there it is not far to visit the “Pamele Church” and the “Lalain house”.
