Visited the Joe James gallery with my daughter, a student at Massachusetts College of Art & Design and my nephew, Andy & Jeff. We were treated to such a great experience in the gallery. Beautiful sculptures and paintings of blues and greens inspired by the gorgeous island of Jamaica. My favorite part was seeing his studio, left just as is...his palette and brushes sitting on the table with a folded newspaper. The research books in the book case and his hat hanging on a peg. It looks as though he just stepped out and was coming right back. So cool.

Not sure if it is a restaurant in a gallery, or vice versa. It doesn't really matter either way.
Got a guided tour from Alfred. Joe James had a gift. He captured the souls of the people he painted. His works depicting the sea and waters of the area imparted a feel for the power that it holds, and the peace that it can fill you with as well.

We stopped for lunch at the adjoined restaurant and found this hidden Jamaican treasure. We were given a tour by the late artist’s son, Michael. Out of respect, I’ve chosen to show only pics of the gallery logo and Michael. Treat yourself to an afternoon of soaking in the artistic talents of Joe James.

Lunch was really really good and the setting is wonderful - right on the water with kitschy and charming decor. The gallery was fine as well although no one was there when we were and it had a deserted feel to it.

Art gallery and suberb Food, accompanied by lapping waves. Simply put, the grilled Lobster here is divine. If you are lucky you can get a tour by the indomitable gentleman Joe James the Artist himself.
A family business that has been around for over 30 years, just shouldn't be missed if you are staying anywhere near Rio Bueno. 40 mins from Mobay, 30 from Ocho Rios.

Mr. Joe James was a very pleasant host. He showed us around his gallery and we had a meal and cold beverages after our tour of his art gallery. He has a lovely gallery ( we were not permitted to take photos) with much of his art work focused around the naked form. Many of the works featured mother and child. The nature art work was mostly of the sea so the hues were very pleasing to the eye. Mr. James took time with us and told us of his history in Jamaica and his times in Europe. He has a most fascinating history and is very candid about his life and the history of Jamaica. While you are visiting the gallery do stop for a bite to eat at the Lobster Box. The views and food will make you glad you did!

I honestly was looking forward to seeing what this gallery had to offer . But upon entering I have to say I was a little disappointed.
The property is located on a nice inlet at discovery bay. But on approach the entrance I would say it could do without the old toilet and with a bit of edge trimming. The gallery seemed quite old and musky with a little more needed in the way of a proper layout.
On top of this to put it quite frankly i felt judged based on what might have been my overly casual appearance on that day. I think that sent out the message that I was not the exotic clientele that would be brimming with US dollars and channels to foreign countries. And I was treated like it.
I was followed throughout the entire gallery and watched quite keenly for what reason, I really am still trying to figure out. I honestly don't think i could walk out the door with piece of artwork without being seen. My questions were curtly answered and upon querying the cost of a few paintings Mr. James directed a worker to attend me because upon observation I was not quite the patron that required personal attention.
The worker sat down and asked a friendly waitress to walk around with me to bring the paintings for her to see and relay the price.After hearing 3000 USD the size for a paintingof a bible, I didn't even bother ask about the others I was interested in.
I guess they were right about the attention I deserved tho because not only did I not think the pieces were worth the prices quoted, I frankly laughed at the fact that I would never spend that kind of money there.

Late answer but, if you're coming from Montego Bay, it is the turn to the left after the Melia Braco Village resort. From Discovery Bay it's the right turn before the entrance to The Meliá resort. There are signs.
