Cannot review as we weren't able to visit, understably, due to covid. It's worth noting that it's only open to worshipers at the moment. Staff at the gate very friendly and helpful. We hope to visit another day.

Its only for indians sikhs and wealthy africans who drive, according to the old watchman manning the gate who is totally arrogant and or rude. And the number on the website is switched off immediately after you call. So racist so classist. I dont recommend.

Makindu is famous because of this. Awesome place about 3 hours drive from Nairobi and a good stopover for travellers going from Nairobi to Mombasa or vice versa... They always have something for the tired to eat as long as you dont waste food and to sleep as well for upto 2 nights. Respect the culture and become a part of it for the short while you are there.

110 Miles from Nirobi city, a journey of 2 hours 40 minutes on the Nairobi Mombasa road. It's a best place to have a night's rest and experience the spiritual relaxation and enjoy the atmosphere. The welcoming people make you feel home. even the guests appear you as friend and welcoming, as if you know them before. every one interact with each other as a family.
Food is delicious and served by the staff and helped by many of the guests as well. Every one tries to contribute in certain way, be it cleaning, serving food, preparing food, at worst assisting in arranging the plates, etc. That's why it feels like a home.
The ambiance is very serene. There is a park for children, green lawns for families to sit on the ground. Big parking space. Neat and clean wash rooms everything is provided like a 4 star hotel here, but free of cost. you donate, whatever you can, or capable of, that's it.
Morning and Evening prayers you can attend. Post dinner, you will see people sitting together to have a friendly chat and do not be surprised to see that all of them are meeting there for first time.
There is no Pre - booking. you just need to reach there, as if they are waiting for you.
Also the drive to and from Nairobi is enjoyable. so a perfect resting destination after a long drive.

The Sikh temple, Gurudwara, in Makindu, about two hours drive from Nairobi, on way to Tsava safari park, in Kenya, is a very quiet, pleasant place, where visitors are welcomed respectfully. It’s a divine place, very well maintained and beautifully built.

A short 2-3 hours journey from Nairobi on the way to Mombasa. The place is divine and you must spend a day to relax ,listen to the kirtan and feel rejuvenated.
The special langar (food) is a bonus. It is really the Golden Temple of Africa.

This temple has a simple but extremely tasty lunch for travellers (free but just donate towards upkeep). An absolute must from road traveller to and from Nairobi.

This Sikh Temple dates back to early 20th century when Mombasa to Nairobi Railway Line was being built. There were several Sikh workers from India who were part of this task force. During evening they would indulge in Kirtan (Devotional singing) and prayers which initiated the formation of this Gurudwara (Sikh temple). Today it has become an important Landmark for all travelers on Mombasa highway. Travellers of all religion stop here, worship, eat in Common Kitchen (Langar) which is open 2x7. My family is travelling to Tanga mid August. My husband would like to visit the Makindu Sikh temple while he is there and is trying to figure out the best way to get there for a overnight visit. He has his yellow fever shots and knows he must get a Kenyan visa. Any suggestions for travel from Tanga to Makindu?
