This fascinating survival sits in a field. It contains original 16th-17th century pews and is very simple inside. Gives a very good idea of churchgoing for the rural peasantry at t he time.

You have to be keen on delightful old chapels to make the journey- but if you are so inclined then its worth the effort. No staff on site- the local farmer locks and unlocks, so no charge and no facilities. What a shame we are told to wear face masks inside but thats not really EH's fault. Trickle of visitors - many on bikes.

The box-pews, pulpit, door, roof and all the woodwork is Tudor and untouched since that period. Looking through the doorway straight out to golden hay stubble, green hills beyond and a clear blue sky was as pretty as a picture.
The information board from English Heritage suggests that the church was rebuilt then but it looks to me like an earlier stone shell had been refitted. There are so many elements that make it seem a smaller version of the definitely 13th century Hughley church a couple of miles away - the corner buttresses, the decorative angled stone course [sorry - forgotten my terminology here] at about 50cm height, the masonry style, etc. And the fact it has one smallish romanesque (round arched) window and a similar sized gothic window also say older.
Regardless of the age of the stonework, it is lovely. Well worth a diversion if you are within 10 miles of the place. I hope it will remain the same for another 400 years

To check this was open we studied the website carefully and believed the Chapel was open today, 12th January.
After a lengthy journey down some interesting roads, we arrived to find the doors locked!

Shame!

Well worth a visit if you're in the area. A small church untouched by time, from the 16th century, and not renovated or altered by the Victorians. Still containing original furniture. A lovely quiet position in a field. The roads around here are mainly single lanes but there are plenty of passing places. There is parking available but only for 2-3 cars.

This is such a gorgeous little chapel and it really is truly a hidden gem well worth a visit to see what churches would have looked like in the 16th century before being over restored and renovated by the Victorians. A real glimpse of our increasingly lost past.

If your in the area, you should go and see Langley chapel. Its so different to see a chapel this old in these surroundings, as its in a field, its very small but you can go inside to take a look. If your into your photography, you will get some great pictures, regardless of the season. Only downfall is parking is very scarce, you have to park in a lay by and any more than two cars you will end up struggling to park.
