Had no access from the road
dez de 2020
We tried getting to the mill recently and found that the road had been blocked with "Private Property" sign on a locked gate. I don't think we used the wrong road since it was the road indicated on Bathurst town attractions map. We were a bit disappointed to not be able to see it, maybe it is closed due to Level 3 lockdown?

Worth a visit but tricky access
out de 2017 • A sós
The road to this very historic mill is rather rough - you need a car with a good ground clearance. The history of the mill is interesting, and you need to consult the voluntary curator (076 294 6516 before visiting. The condition of the mill and its wheel are excellent and well worth seeing. The South African water mills are fast disappearing and those that are being maintained need to be supported.

Thank you for the wonderful review. Our Non Profit organisation looks after the "unmanned" heritage sites in and around Bathurst. The restoration and maintenance of the Old Mill was our first project. We are now turning our attention to the Toposcope

Interesting from an historic perspective

Gentleman who looks after the Mill provided lots of information, and even set the Mill in operation. With more funds it could be a greater draw for tourists

Dear Ian thank you for the feedback. The Mill is funded through donations to a NPO called Historic Bathurst. We always hope for donations and paid trips to the Mill. They allow us to maintain it as best we can

Very interesting spot, loved it.

Was a bit difficult to find. Place close attention to the signs. If the gate is closed call the number on the board. We were lucky and he was there. A gentleman who gave us loads of information. The mill was restored in the 60's (I think). Yellow wood beams and floors are quite incredible luxury. Don't think it is doable given the value of the wood now. Wheel still turns. I was here 30 years ago with my mom and dad and I loved taking my kids. My 8 yo was a little bored by my 12 yo was quite interested. There for about 30 mins.

Hi Martin, thank you for your kind words. A small group of volunteers operate under the auspices of an NGO called Historic Bathurst. The mill is overseen by us. For the benefit of other readers it is possible to arrange for the guide on duty to meet you elsewhere if you are not sure of directions. There is nothing more magic than to see the huge wheel turn with such a small trickle of water.

Highlight of my Bathurst Trip
dez de 2016 • Casais
This was one of the highlights of my visit to Bathurst, definitively a must do. You follow a gravel road to the mill, there is signs and its easy to find. Once at the gate you phone the curator if he is not there. The response is fast and within 5 to 10 min he is there. You then continue to the mill. Once there the guide takes over and explained the history of the mill. The best part is that you actually get to see how the mill works. You also get to walk inside, see some old pictures and equipment. We could not have asked for a more knowledgeable and friendly guide.

Thank you Justin, Our revolving curator system involves a group of volunteers. The curator on duty will be delighted by your feedback. Seeing the wheel turning with the weight of a stream of water is a special experience.

Stuck in the Mud!
jul de 2016 • Casais
We never made it to the mill as followed the sign that led down a dirt road. Unfortunately this was so muddy that we got stuck! After about an hour a kindly local with a Ford Fortuner stopped and offered us a tow back to the tar road.
There should be dangerous signs up for us city dwellers without 4 x 4 vehicles!

So please don't venture down this road if it's been raining!!

Hi Kaapie We are really sorry you got stuck! We try to discourage people going to the Mill unattended, and have a "guide of the day" system . They will accompany you and also advise on the road!

Fascinating

Really enjoyed the visit to the mill. Incredible that it still functions. Very informative guide. A bit of a wait to get access - the curator must be phoned to come and unlock the access gates (this is well sign-posted). Well worth a visit, especially if you're interested in 1820 Settler history.

Thank you for your kind review Andrew, A group of volunteers have formed a Non Profit trust to look after the Mill and all the "unmanned" national monuments around Bathurst. The Mill is our first project. We really do appreciate the support.

Thank you for your review. Bradshaws Mill is maintained by a small volunteer interest group in the Historic Village of Bathurst. The fees we earn from the entrance fee are used to maintain and improve the Mill and its environment. It is always heartening to receive positive endorsements such as yours.

A curators perspective
abr de 2015 • Família
You really must see this piece of our history in action. The building and it timbers came from the surrounding bush. Many have invested in its restoration including the late Geoff Palmer who rebuilt the wheel. Your support is needed to bring new life to the mill. The production of stone ground wheat flour is one of the possibilities. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy the abundant birdlife.
