We hired Guias de Alturas for the task and they were awesome. They usually guide on Pico Duarte (The highest mountain in the Caribbean) but they made an exception with us. They decided to guide us on Mogote!

The hike is really steep and you can reach the top in something between 3-4 hours.

Really good for the muscles!

It's a good trail if you want some kind of difficulty and views. I recommend to go early, so you can come back at the same day, there isn't a lot at the summit, just the view.

We hiked El Mogote after it rained the day before and it was very slippery and muddy, especially on the second half. I am a marathoner, trail runner and Ironman athlete and I thought the hike was challenging but manageable - resting after steep ascents. The other person with me was let fit and had a very hard time with this hike, but persevered. The way down we were holding onto trees and slid on our butts at times because it was so slippery. Wear your hiking boots or trail running shoes. We had trail running backpacks with water reservoirs (think Camelbacks) and it was very helpful to be hands free. Definitely bring water or hydration drink and energy gels, blocks, or bars. This hike just keeps going up and up and up - very few level places. You'll love the views and you'll pass lime, coffee and mango trees. Bring a plastic bag with you so on your way down you can collect some trash that other hikers leave behind (so uncool). We had a fantastic guide for this hike - you don't necessarily need one because once you enter the trail head and veer left (not right) there aren't any other turns, but ours picked us up and dropped us back off (via motorbike) and pointed out the lime, coffee and mango trees we would have missed otherwise. He is a professional guide and will take you wherever you want: Porfirio 809-426-6342 - he speaks Spanish - reach him through WhatsApp. We loved this hike so much that we are considering doing Pico Duarte in another year or two!

Délka cca 7km tam a zpět a 900m převýšení.
Nahoře pěkný rozhled, a žádný krámek ani suvenýry.
S sebou dost vody a nějakou vrcholovou prémii ;-)

We scaled El Mogote in April 2018. We were a group aged 23-59 with various fitness levels. This is a pretty steep hike, so wear shoes with good traction. One member dropped out about 1/2 of the way up. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to scale, but if you are in good shape, it will take you less time. Be sure to bring enough water--I would recommend at least 1.5 L. At the top we encountered a pretty view and a fire watchman who stays at the top for a month at a time. Harder coming down the mountain; many of slid down more than once. Definitely felt the climb in the quads and glutes several days afterward. Great exercise and pretty view. I would definitely recommend it!

Just finished El Mogote. Easy path to follow, but it's all up hill. There is a few areas that level out. There are two very steep sections, one on the way to the top of the first mountain, then the last push to the summit. I would avoid at all cost if wet. It was sunny and dry when we went. It is a very difficult trail, don't let anyone fool you that's it easy. We made it up and back in 5 hours. Wear well supported hiking boots. The trail is rutted from rain washout on most of the steep sections and it's rocky too. I wore trail running shoes. BIG MISTAKE ! My feet and knees were toast by the time we got down. Hiking poles would also be a big help. Take plenty of water and some light snacks.
