Absolutely loved our visit to El Cora. Our tour guide was Alfredo who was fantastic. His English was excellent and his passion for the animals really brought something special to the tour. It’s amazing to see the amount of work they do there and the animals they care for.

The tour lasts around an hour and is 250 pesos pp. definitely go for the guided tour option.

If you’re getting a taxi, ask them to wait.

Let me start by saying that I have deliberately given this a poor review for a very good reason - namely people tend to skip over the good reviews and focus on the poor ones - hence I wanted you to read this.
My wife and I are from the UK and spent an amazing few hours here, no it’s not a theme park with rides and attractions, nor is it a zoo with a vast array of animals, nor does it have a glitzy cafe or restaurant where you can buy sweets and ice creams BUT what it is, is the opportunity to learn and understand what we are doing to our planet and it’s natural animals.
There are two options when visiting,
1/ walk around on your own or
2/ take the guided tour which costs fractionally more than the unguided tour.
If you choose option 1 to walk around on your own you will probably leave thinking there wasn’t much to see.
Take the tour and you will leave as we did totally overwhelmed by the amazing work and care these guys are committing to the animals in this sanctuary/animal rescue centre.
Remember - Every single animal in there has its own story. Take for example the first crocodile you will see, it’s in a pen not doing much and if just doing your own walk you will probably be a bit disappointed with what you see, however take the tour and you will learn that this was once a wild creature who is now blind in both eyes, probably shot by fishermen or farmers, he responds to the carers voices and relies entirely upon his hosts to survive, he can never be released back into the wild because he could not survive unfortunately or fortunately (dependant upon your view) he can live for 80 years that is one heck of a responsibility for his care, walk a little further and you come across two macaws, very pretty you may think then hear the story of why they are there and you will start to grasp the importance of what these guys do here, I won’t spoil the rest of the tour for you - but you won’t be disappointed.
Our guide for the day was Alfredo, a veterinary professional who dedicates his time and life to rescuing and where possible releasing back into the wild the animals they have rescued - sadly for some this will never happen (as you will learn).
I would encourage anyone and everyone to visit this reserve - see it for what it is and for the outstanding work that these dedicated professionals do.
Thank you for taking the time to read this

We are from England and had read the reviews about taxis. It cost 300 pesos from the Sheraton, Puerto Vallerta. We didn't ask him to stay although I am sure he would have done. The staff called us a taxi following our tour and although we had to wait, we sat in the cool and wandered around the sanctuary a few more times. If you go take drinks and maybe something to eat, there is no cafe, there is a toilet and a little shop section. It was 250 pesos each for a tour with one of the staff which was the best option as Alfredo (qualified vet) took us around and told us the story about how every animal or bird was there. He was so knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. It was a fantastic tour but such a shame to know that humans are destroying their habitat to build more hotels.
Highly recommend this to anyone, not a huge place but definately enough to see to make a trip worth it. Your money is also helping to support them in their continuing efforts to rescue and rehabilitate or if too injured to keep them happy for the rest of their lives.

We visited this sanctuary while on vacation in Bucerias. It was a nice experience to learn about crocodiles and other species that live in this place. Alfredo is a very nice guide, knowledgeable and helpful. One can feel that he really loves animals and his job. This sanctuary is one of the interesting things to attend in the area.

Excellent place to visit, road in is a little tuff to find but don’t let that ruin the experience, the guides are very knowledgeable and friendly, with more help they could do a lot more for the animals

We were looking for something different to do as a family near our hotel in PV. We drove up a bumpy road which the kids loved through a city jungle to get to the crocodile sanctuary. We opted to get a guide to show us around which I highly recommend. our guide Alfredo was excellent, he is a vet living on the sanctuary 24/7 to care for the crocodiles and other sick or injured animals. We saw plenty of crabs, the cutest pig asking for chin scratches, a macaw, parrot, squirrels, cranes and of course crocodiles. A highlight for the kids was touching a baby crocodile and simply walking the short boardwalk and spotting crabs and cranes. We saw the crocodiles in their pens which were being treated or getting ready to be released. The crocodiles in the large pond were getting ready to breed and were hiding so we didn't see them, but it didn't really matter with all the other animals we saw and the stories Alfredo shared of life on the sanctuary made this a highlight of our trip for sure.

This is 100% a hidden gem in Nayarit. I have been coming here for years and didn’t know it existed until I stumbled across it online. This is a rehab sanctuary, not a zoo. You can take a guided tour for a very reasonable price and see and learn a lot. Our guide is a marine biologist and is very passionate about crocodiles and conservation. It was very interactive and I learned a lot. He spoke great English too. It’s a little off the beaten path but better than any expensive tour I’ve done. It would be good for all ages. Another family was in our tour group with young children and they loved it. It takes about an hour and then you are free to wander around to visit any of the animals again. They have other animals in addition to the crocs which change as they release them once they are healed. It was great and I would highly recommend it. They do awesome work and are dependent on the tours for revenue so please check it out! If you are coming by cab, I would plan to have them wait as there are not really any cabs around.

Great experience at this crocodile & animal sanctuary. Tour by biologist Cesar was informative and entertaining. Our teens loved it, and they are not impressed by much! Highly recommend this for anyone interested in wildlife, holding tiny crocs was definitely a highlight. Make sure if you get a taxi there you arrange to have them stay and wait for you. Took just over an hour for tour, cost was very reasonable and went towards supporting the sanctuary.
