We had a wonderful stay at Te Rakau. Our group of four were doing the Remutaka rail trail, and we spent New Year’s Eve at the Bunkhouse and the Te Rakau cabins.
It was an incredible place, with abundant native bird life, friendly animals, campfire, outdoor bath and so many stars!
It’s a great option for those on the rail trail and for families. There are wetlands across the road and many walking tracks to explore in the area.
Dougal and Denise are wonderful hosts.
The facilities have everything you need, although the Bunkhouse has a portaloo which may not be for everyone.
We will be back for sure.

We had a lovely stay here! Denise and Dougal are great hosts and they were great helping us with directions for the next day around the coast. We would love to return for a birding tour. Going for a wander up from the cabins afforded fabulous views to Palliser Bay and as far South we could see the Kaikouras. Our home cooked meal was delicious. The cabins included all we needed for our stay. Highly recommended.

I took my parents to this wonderful birding day tour including meal package after our good friend highly recommend this tour to us. The hosts Denise and Dougal are very nice and friendly. Dougal is has great knowledge about the indigenous birds, ecosystem and history in the local areas. He loves nature and has passion for the birds. We have been to many places and learned a lot from him on the trip. He pointed out the then-coastline where the ship wreckage debris located when the ship sank in 1904. However it has now been turned to the black sandy beach by nature. The hot tasty home-made vegetable soup was cooked and served by Denise when we returned from our trip in the afternoon. They also provide unique railway carriage-turned accommodations being surrounded by natural bushes and scenic views. We highly recommend this tour to the other people. We wish to go there again in the future and might try the accommodation next time.

This was my second stay with Denise and Dougal in their unique and homely accommodation - this time with some friends when cycling the rimutaka cycle trail.

As we were riding light, we took advantage of the food package - Wow! What a delicious treat! We arrived to the lovely smell of a home cooked stew waiting in the crock pot with a scrumptious home baked cake and high quality supplies for our breakfast and lunch the following day.

The converted railcar accommodation is fantastic, and the chiminea with well stocked wood supply a bonus for fireside yarns late into the night in very big sky country. The ecostore products were also great for a nice hot shower at the end of the day's ride.

All of us were most impressed and I will certainly be back again with the family or friends for accessible isolation at it's best!
