The Vintage Aviator Museum is closed for public tours for the foreseeable future as the hangar is too crammed with aircraft to safely walk around. Group tours can be arranged if they coincide with pilot training weekends at the end of each month between October and April

Don't hesitate to open the doors. All the doors. Inside each hangar, you will find different planes from the early WW1 till nowadays, with some surprises like a Belgian Hanriot-Dupont HD1 or a Corsair that's not a F4U but a Goodyear FG-1D

Having been to an airshow here a couple of years ago I knew that the museum would be good. However the amazing attention to detail in bringing the World War 1 aircraft back to life is stunning.

We read the reviews and were keen to visit the museum.
However there was little info on line about opening hours or who runs the museum.
We also enquired at the tourist information centre in Martinborough. They made phone calls and informed us that the aviator museum is currently closed to the public at least until the 'Wings over Wairarapa Airshow" 22-24 Feb 2019.
Hard to rate it fairly when you haven't seen it.

My brother and I visited this lovely attraction on a day when there was a tour with explanations of the old aircraft collection. Reasonably priced it was wonderful to walk amongst these old aircraft many provided by film director Peter Jackson. While there a kittyhawk was taken up and it was fabulous to get this unexpected treat of an aircraft in flight. Another unexpected exhibition bonus was an old car, one of those used in the film "Chiltty Chitty Bang Bang". If you are interested in old aircraft then this place should not be missed.

Visited the Vintage Aviator during my Masterton stay. I could not believe the quality and rarity of the aircraft displayed and flown there. The attention to detail and authenticity is unbelievable and the equally friendly and knowledgeable staff made the experience even better. To hear the sound of 100 year old engines and see original WW.I aircraft flying in the Hood Aerodrome setting is an unforgettable experience that shall be repeated.

I'm not an aviation/ World War I buff, but interested and I recognise a good museum when I see one. A collection that's close to being unique. The guided tour was by an enthusiast who loved his topic, and on more than one occasion asked if he was pitching his talk to our level of interest and knowledge. I echo the praise in the other reviews.

This museum is worth spending a couple of hours in - whilst entry was $15 per adult, there was a guided tour twice per day and that is worth attending. The guides are passionate about their collection of WW1 aircraft (restored/operational and those which are static displays) and can talk for hours with an appreciative audience. The museum has more aircraft than first imagined and for aviation fans of vintage aircraft it's on the Must See bucket list.
It's worth attending one of the Museum's flying days or the biennial Wings over Wairarapa airshow, just to see the aircraft take to the skies in mock dog fights. The collection belongs to Peter Jackson, the film maker and it's awe inspiring to see the dedication, time and funds he has poured into keeping a collection of WW1 aircraft alive.

A great collection of world war I planes under one roof. Enough to look at and find out about - especially if you are not the one interested in aircraft. The tour guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. All planes are in working order which they will fly again soon on the weekend of the 18th of February - Wings over Masterton. You can visit here for 30 mins to an hour or so depending on your interest. I would recommend a visit and it only costs $15 per adult (including the tour)

Very understated but highly recommended. Clearly if you are into aircraft you will love. If you are not particularly 'into' planes but have a passing interest in history or engineering, you will enjoy. Allow at least an hour for the very knowledgable and passionate guides to talk you through the designs of the planes, their manufacture and involvement in the course of WW1. If you are around for one of the flying days, that would be a treat. A real gem.
