Athenree Homestead is a ' must see' for all ages. Built in 1878, this lovley homestead fell in to disrepair in the 1950's. It has been so fantastically restored by volunteers and is a credit to the tremendous work they have put in. The photos in the homestead show how life was in the time of the Stewarts.
The outlook over the Harbour and Bowntown is stunning also. The grounds are immaculately kept. Toilets spotlessly clean.
Added bonus is Tea/coffee and Scone with Jam and Cream in the old station building at the rear.
The volunteer staff are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The attention to detail was incredible.

The home has existed since the late 1800's and is now restored . You can view the home interior, partake in the café and browse the gardens. It shows the early history of the Ulster settlement in the Katikati and surrounding area . It is a must for history buffs.
Has also been a Railway Station

Lovely spot to visit, especially if you are interested in things historical, or in gardens. Beautiful big old trees in the garden and old fashioned flowers around the house. The house is lovingly restored/rebuilt, and furnished with items from the period. Interesting notices on the walls about the past owners or with quotes from a book by original owner... the book is available to purchase. Photos of the restoration process. Very informative volunteers available to talk with you about the history of the place. Lovely views towards the harbour. And devonshire tea in bone china tea cups available to purchase in the historic railway station located behind the house. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the scones were a little, shall we say, 'solid' compared to some I have eaten. But really, the house visit and the devonshire tea are excellent value for money and a charming way to spend an hour or so.

What a fantastic experience the volunteers made the visit. Keen to answer any questions and also give interesting facts about the family, house, furniture and other places of interest. Idyllic and peaceful surroundings. Tea and scones at the rail carriage were tasty and very welcome after a flow drive in traffic from Tauranga. Well worth the money and time spent!

The Historical Athenree Homestead should be on anyone's list to visit if you are in the area. Two volunteers were kind enough to meet us there over Labour Weekend to open the homestead up for us and give us a tour. It is a great look at a house from the late 18th Century. They have done a good job of returning the homestead to its former glory. Be sure to also pick up a copy of 'My Simple Life in New Zealand', written by the first occupant of the homestead.

A homestead from the 19th century (1878), when European settlers migrated to NZ in large numbers. A blast from NZ's past complete with period furniture and implements...

A lovely setting for afternoon tea in the old railway station after a visit to the lovingly restored homestead. Huge scones with fresh cream, homemade jam and gallons of freshly brewed tea.
Friendly service from the volunteer staff. Highly recommended.
