A long journey from Stratford to Taumaranui which you only need to do once. Good to see Whangamomona Hotel (as its well known) and look at the historic photos on display. We drove down a side road to see Makahu tunnel and drove through the other tunnel (both amazing feats of engineering given their age) on SH43. The unsealed part of the road was really bumpy and we were pleased to get back onto the sealed road. The surrounding land to the road was often steep and marginal for productive use We saw lots of goats and drove through a herd of sheep being moved down the road. You could see why people abandoned this area to search for other areas to live and farm.

Just a brief shout out to the lovely Sophie. Sorted out a 'surprise' gift for my sister, who was recently staying at the Forgotten World Motel. My sister celebrated her 60th birthday with a trip to the Forgotten World Highway. Sophie went the extra mile to organise a wee surprise for her, on my behalf. This customer service was just fantastic and added to the wonderful experience my sister and her family had whilst staying. Thanks again Sophie.

An excellent drive through the back-blocks that is spoilt by the condition of the road from Whangamomona to Taumarunui - Waka Kotahi has abandoned the area by the looks of it leaving local council to do what they can - Stratford to Whangamomona is okay with some great views. The Mohi Tunnel is interesting and unfortunately Joseph Morgan's grave memorial has been badly damaged by a fallen tree.

This was a wonderful drive ... just took our time, stopping off at most of the viewpoints on the Heritage Trail. Popped down a couple of side roads to see further points of interest. Enjoy the drive... take your time ... it is a great trip

A long, beautiful and winding road, through farmlands and bush. The (yet?) unpaved 12km are stunning through the gorge. Don’t forget to stop at the quaint/quirky Whangamomona Republic.

Forgotten Highway is one of those nz road trips you should do once in your lifetime….but only once. Beautiful saddle scenery, narrow roads with lots of potholes and 12kms of gravel road and animals sheep and goats crossing the road in front of you. Its a very slow trip for these reasons. Whangamoana was very historic. Good to do while there is no overseas tourists we only passed a couple of cars the whole journey. Ticked off the list!

After researching the hell out of this venture, my two issues were: (1) how terrible are these supposedly daunting saddles? and (2) the logistics of getting to the start point Taumarunui with your bike when you are staying in New Plymouth? Well, after being used to cycling the Waitakeres, including Mountain Road, Piha Hill, the Karekare Cutting and other challenging climbs, I found these saddles a little underwhelming, except that with carrying a light backpack because I wasn't organised enough to get panniers, I often did find myself sometimes in the granniest of granny gears on my Trek Checkpoint SL-5. None of the climbs seemed much longer than a kilometre though, and none was anything like the worst of the Waitakeres or Port Hills of Christchurch. The second issue, the logistics, was solved in the end by biting the bullet and requesting a transfer from New Plymouth to Taumarunui (on the morning I started the ride) with Eastern Tananaki Experience. The most tiresome aspect of the two-day ride (I stayed in Whangamomona overnight) was the two longish gravel sections — including the 17-km Junction Road one — which proved a little uncomfortable on my machine (Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres on a gravel bike). As others have said, it's not really the scenery you do it for, as it's pretty average for NZ, but the lack of cars. The ability to relax was the highlight of the trip.

Such a great drive, so beautiful, take the time to read all the signs and learn all about the lives of the men and woman who pioneered this trail.

....so make sure you give yourself plenty of time and savour the experience. The road is generally quiet, but don't expect to drive at speed. Enjoy the bends and the astonishing views from the top of the various saddles. Take a diversion north at Douglas to the Strathmore Golf Club - at $2 a round it's the cheapest you'll ever find! Just try not to hit any sheep, and beware of the 3rd hole - it is easy to miss completely!
Mt Damper Falls are worth a look, but not as good as, say, Dawson Falls.
You must stop in Whangamomona to walk around and call in at the historic hotel.
Beware of roadworks on the 12km of metalled section in the middle, and make sure you pass the time of day with the lady on the Stop sign!

There is, but all closed due to the Covid 19. A lot of places you can stop and relax if you bring your own.

I think the Stratford to Taumarunui is best.
I love on a fine day when you get your first view of the three mountains in the middle of the island and you have more places to go when you get there.
Hi how many tunnels on the route from taumaranui and what are their height?

There is only one tunnel on the Forgotten Highway (Moki Tunnel). It's on the Taumarunui side of Whangamomona. The sign on it said it was around 4.5m high - apparently the road was lowered at some stage in the past to allow those double layer stock trucks to go through.

There is one stretch about 8km long being unsealed, means gravel and for Motorbyces for sure no fun. Rest is sealed and ok.

Hi I believe there are no trains departing or arriving Stratford. We went there from Wellington to Stratford by Intercity Bus last time. The Naked Bus and Mana Bus do not travel to Stratford. Otherwise I recommend you to drive as a more independent option.

This attraction has what look like golf carts that you drive on the old rail tracks. Is it possible for someone with walking difficulties who uses a stick or walker to be able to get from a car park to the vehicles with easy access?

Yes, you should be able to manage without too many difficulties. Friendly staff at the office will be able to give advice regarding your specific needs. The buggies do run on an old train track so you would need to be careful when getting out at stops during the trip as there are railway sleepers and coarse gravel underfoot.
