Superb morning out on Ram's Island on Lough Neagh.

We caught the Island Warrior passenger ferry from Sandy Bay Marina near Glenavy. We followed the map on the ramisland.org website and found it OK, though there's no sign on the marina to advertise the ferry. It run by friendly and knowledgeable volunteers who answered all my questions. Veronica cheerfully welcomed us the ferry and sorted us out with refreshments on the island.

The Island itself is wonderful. There's a green that was set up with the refreshments including scones and beverages. We got to meet some if the local chickens who live on the island and help out with biodiversity by eating the seeds of the invasive Himalayan Balsam.
There's a lovely little chalet there that can be rented, too.

We had a really interesting tour given by Kevin of the site of the ruins of the caretakers cottage, tower and summer house. We met some campers in a glade and heard about the wildlife that lives on the island.

There's a lot of tree cover and a interpretive centre on a barge should it be wet. We were lucky as it was warm and sunny today.

It was very sad to see so much algae in Loch Neagh. I really hope that something is done to tackle this as it must be extremely damaging to the life of Lough Neagh.

I'm from Northern Ireland but had never been here before. It's always lovely to discover beautiful, peaceful parts of my home country.

The volunteers are doing a wonderful job and really deserve to get more financial help from local government so they can continue to make Ram's Island accessible to the general public.

What a unique and magical experience. I brought my son and 5 buddies camping for the weekend and despite the 4 seasons in a day weather we often get in this part of the world they had a fantastic weekend. The island is beautifully maintained by the Ram's Island volunteers, excellent trails for walkers of all abilities taking you to sights such as the round tower, Cardwell's Cottage and a beautiful stony beach with a view of the entire Lough. We camped in a beautifully maintained grassy meadow surrounded by majestic trees where numerous chickens, grouse, moorhens, pheasants, doves and muscovy ducks roamed contendly in their predator-free island paradise. What a beautiful and special place so lovingly cared for by the Ram's Island Heritage volunteers. We're so greatful to them for all the time and hard work that went into making the island accessible to visitors.

Lovely island well woth a visit tranquil with some chickens running about.
I took my own kayak over from Sandy bay where the island warrior boat is.
Sandy Bay is a bit grubby with old vehicles and caravans dotted about the place and the owner wanted a fee of 5 pounds for parking so if you're going make sure you have money.
I will definitely be back at Rams island but won't be setting off from Sandy Bay encampment.
Huge difference between gas heaters lying about a boat yard and the island itself.

Such a brilliant trip. Michael is a legend - very knowledgeable and exceptional skipper. Once on the island, the hospitality was second to none. Cup of tea/cakes on arrival and (we forgot to bring a picnic) pot noodles/hot dogs to keep grumpy kids happy.
Lovely walks around the island and beautiful views across the lake.
All run by volunteers.

The website gives details of the ferry from near Glenavy to the island. But make contact in advance, as there is no signal at the point of departure.

Ram's island is a mile long and 1/4 mile across. There are mature trees, the remains of a Round Tower, the ruins (keep out!) of the land-owner's summer house, tea-making facilities and toilets. We only had about an hour on the island, but with a longer visit it is possible to walk to the end of the island.
