Great castle, well preserved, so good commentary & explanations of evens.
Very pleasant location to sit with picnic tables provided.
Staff member was friendly & helpful.

This little gem is tucked away at the end of a charming period High Street. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but more and more unfolds as you go round. The barracks above the shop have been left as they would have been in 1720 when soldiers were living there. In the castle itself, there are some interesting information panels about the Dutch raid on the Medway in 1667. We spent a couple of hours here. Picnic tables, self-service tea/coffee machine and snacks, small souvenir shop and great views over the Medway to Chatham Dockyard.

The last time I came here, 20 years ago admittedly, this place was so much better. It was run by English Heritage then and had a fascinating audio trail. Now the place is run by Medway Council on behalf of English Heritage, with an unwelcoming person behind the counter. If you have socially challenged staff, fine, but I’m not sure placing them as meet and greet is the best idea. So what has happened to the audio tour? The numbers are still there on the wall, as a reminder… The place just doesn’t seem looked after at all, and it’s no longer engaging. The last time I came here it was brilliant but not anymore. It’s a real shame.

We are English Heritage members. So glad that we didn’t pay £14.80 entry fee to this very dull place. We were met with a very unwelcoming woman on the front desk who scrutinised our membership cards without saying one word to us! Needs some people skills!
You wander around a few bare rooms with minimal information to read which didn’t feel fun or engaging. Thankfully our daughters weren’t with us as they would have been really bored. We love castles but this one was really boring from an adults point of view and we saw it all in a mere 15 mins! Don’t bother going here

Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us. It is always helpful to hear what our visitors think about our castle. I'm sorry you were disappointed in your visit. I will follow up with our front of house team regarding the lack of welcome you received, this is very disappointing to hear. Regarding the lack of interpretation, this is something we are currently working on. We are hoping to introduce more interpretative elements to the site, so in future a visit to the castle will be more immersive, education, fun and engaging. I'm sorry this time you visit to us was such a quick one - we do have visitors who spend hours here exploring the nooks and crannies, and taking in the lovely views by the river. Keep an eye on our social media pages for updates on our events, activities and interpretation plans.

I'd never heard of this place until a friend suggested a visit. Those of us in our group with English Heritage membership got free entry, but the lady at the desk was clueless about the concessions for civil servants which a member of our party was entitled to use for herself and a guest. Her approach was less than welcoming, despite this friend supplying all the relevant paperwork. An
opportunity for better training for staff/volunteers perhaps? The barracks and castle itself are quite small and bare. There is written information about their history and the famous battle of 1667, but I didn't come across any audio visual presentation which would have been better than just having to read
the boards yourself. However, the views from the castle looking across the river are lovely and there are nearby pubs where visitors can take further advantage of this.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review, it is really helpful to get this kind of feedback. I will make sure all staff know about the CSC card, and I'm sorry you felt the staff member was less than welcoming this time. I will follow up on this and ensure our customer service skills are up to standards expected by visitors. We are currently working on new interpretation for the castle and Barrack Block so do watch this space!

It’s rather hard to rate Upnor Castle as one’s view of it probably depends on whether you are a member of English Heritage or not. If you are a not a member then the entry prices seem rather expensive bearing in mind there isn’t a great amount to see. One can probably view everything in about an hour, including reading all the information boards. Since many rooms are basically bare except for printed information boards I do not think the average child would find it very interesting. However, if you are a member of English Heritage then admission is free and so I would therefore say the castle is worth a look around if you happen to be in the area. The information given about the Dutch invasion in the 17th century made interesting reading for history loving adults. There are steep steps in places around the castle so it is probably not suited to those who have mobility problems. Good views over the river can be seen from the castle, however, the rather picturesque view of the castle (that features in advertising material) can’t be seen whilst actually at the castle itself; one would need to be on the opposite side of the river or on a boat to see that view. There is a small gift shop in the castle grounds and the onsite toilets were clean. It does not have a café, however, there is a child friendly pub next door (The Tudor Rose) that sells a range of dishes from light bites to full meals. The car park for the castle is free and easy to find. From the car park one walks down the quaint, cobbled, High Street to reach the castle itself (this takes approximately 5 minutes). In summary, I’d say Upnor Castle is worth a quick visit if you belong to English Heritage and are already in the area.

Visited on Wednesday, 27th October, 2021. Enjoyable short walk from the car park down village high street to the castle. The building is set in small but well kept grounds. Content explains the Dutch raid in 1667 very well. Total experience marred by a male member of staff at the ticket office more interested in showing his female companion the photographs on his mobile phone whist we were showing our membership cards. I can understand the dog ban for the buildings but It is a pity they are not allowed past the entrance to sit outside the castle itself whilst owners take turns in entering. Missed a more friendly welcome.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I'm very sorry you were not met by with a more friendly welcome. I will follow this up to ensure every visitor receives the welcome they expect from a site like ours. We are working hard on keeping the grounds neat and tidy, and currently working on a programme of works to the site such as exterior painting and new interpretation, so do come back in the future, as much is changing!

Set in the quaint village of Upnor just by the River Medway, Upnor Castle is worth visiting just for some of the wonderful views. However a small car park is often busy and crowded. The shop is pretty limited. Given those limitations, the display on the 1667 Battle of Medway is meticulous in its coverage. Some of the other displays could do with a wipe over though and try and avoid the dead pigeons in the tunnel!

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to write a review for us, visitor feedback is very useful for improving our offer here. We share our carpark with the village, so it can get busy at times throughout the year. We are currently bringing in new stock lines to our shop, so worth popping back in for some great gift ideas. Thank you for letting us know your thoughts on our Battle of Medway exhibition, we are glad you found it informative and enjoyable. Thanks for your note about the condition of the other interpretation on site. We will endeavour to tidy them up whilst we work on updating them.

This is maintained by Medway Council (and not English Heritage), and we were off to a rocky start when the door wasn't unlocked until 10:17. We had arrived at 10:00 (opening time), double and triple checked the opening hours and were about to return to our car when the door was unlocked.

The Barrack Block was empty rooms, with a few wall hangings / pictures. There was a good display of information in the 'magazine', and everywhere was accessible and we were able to walk around freely (without a guide).

We were probably only here about 45 minutes.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review, it is really helpful to get this insight. I will check back as to what was happening on 23/9/22. I apologise that there was a delay in entering site that day. We are currently working on projects to improve the content and interpretation of our Barrack Block and rooms in the castle so watch this space!

Not the usual cheerful English Heritage welcome when you check in - in fact downright surly. The castle is a huge disappointment - just a few dimly lit rooms so dim that it was difficult to read the information on the display boards. It really is not worth the effort of going to this rather sad castle.
