So many displays that show the creativity of those who work with wood. Practical as well as whimsical items are there to enjoy. The vast number of wood types used in the woodwork is certainly amazing.

This was our first visit to this extensive museum, art gallery, school displaying and expounding the capabilities of wood. Many items by contemporary artists, often with a solid local representation, with both permanent and special presentations. Photography is encouraged. A shop is available with a wide range of purchases at a wide range of prices. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm from Tuesday through Saturday. Call ahead since there are also special showings.

The Center for Art in Wood located in Old City is one of the most important proponent of wood art in the Word. It has periodic exhibitions of the finest wood artists as well as one of the best collections of wood art available. It is frequently pointed out by the New York Times as a must visit in Philadelphia. It also has a shop with interesting items at many price points. Even if you are unfamiliar with wood art, this is a must visit.

With a permanent collection, special exhibits and work by contemporary local and well known artists and crafters this is a visit worth adding to an Old Philly tour. Many items for sale.

Always enjoyed fine art, but also unique. This place is hands down amazing. The amount of talent these artists have is astonishing. Saw masterpieces I could barely believe with my own eyes. Things made of only wood, just simply wonderful. Main floor has larger exhibits, upstairs has thousands of smaller exhibits. There is also a small retail section with some awesome works. Staff is super friendly. Do yourself a favor and spend at least an hour here. Free of charge as well. Photos are welcome and encouraged so go nuts!

It is what it is - a wood art museum and gallery. That said, the price is right, the art is interesting, it is a great break from historical Philly. Upstairs are smaller cases of hundreds of pieces. Not wood fans can breeze through quickly or endure it relatively painlessly, or shop in the neighborhood, while wood fans will want to spend more time there.

Take an hour or so and add this to your tour of Old City Philadelphia. Near Christ Church and Elfreths Alley, this site will provide a little mental & visual sorbet. It's not an overly large gallery space but they make the most out of it. Figure about 45 minutes to an hour in time. You will be amazed at the range of work and craftsmanship displayed in this common material.
As an added bonus, they have a terrific small gift shop perfect for those seeking one of a kind or a limited edition gift/souvenir.

Right down near several galleries what also sell furniture, the center plays a major part in the life of wood turners and furniture makers in this part of the US. They have a great collection of turned and fabricated objects, and always run a special exhibit. Albert Lecoff is a one man band, and this is his passion, but also much more than that. Visit, absorb the talent and artistic efforts of all of the people who have been affected by his vision. Worth the effort if you have any interest in objects made from wood.
