Mountains surround you and cactus and scrub brush everywhere. We spent several days driving the park and did not see it all. It's a different kins of pretty here.

The unpaved 6 mile gravel road to get to the trailhead was pretty rough (45 minutes). At one point we almost turned back because of a steep hill with large divets but we made it! We have a midsize truck - Chevrolet Colorado with 2WD. The hike was awesome! It was definitely tough and almost all uphill the first 2 miles (4 miles total), but totally worth it when you get to the face of the mountain at the end. I guess there is only a waterfall after it rains but it was still beautiful. I would recommend doing this hike early. We had the trail to ourselves until around 1pm. Highly recommend if you have a high clearance vehicle!

Sure the road there can be rough in the washes... That's why they warn you. A friend made it in a Ford Focus. Maybe it's user error...

Wonderful campsites with wonderful views. Hike gets steep at the end. Bring plenty of water.

It was a good hike, but I wouldn't make that drive again if you paid me. Very rough road..and we were in a 4x4. Never again.

Other than high clearance vehicles only. We enjoyed the views here, there are 5 primitive campsites here. You must obtain your permit from Panther Junction Visitor Center before camping here. They are open til 5pm, so time your drive before going and expect the campsites to be fully booked during spring breaks and holidays.
See my photos for the views.

Visited on 4/7/15 and a half dozen times previously. Can't add a lot to what folks have said except the drive up the dirt track to the trailhead is not that bad. Made it easily in a Subaru Forester with street tires. A hard rain could change things and make clearance a problem but just about any vehicle could make it up there right now.

Drive in 4-5 miles on a rugged dirt road to the trail head. (A high clearance vehicle is mandatory!). The trail was gorgeous, as the desert had received a lot of rain in the prior weeks, and everything was in bloom.

When you hit the Chisos Mountain, expect a steep hike up 1000' feet.

This is a fantastic dirt road and hiking experience in Big Bend NP. Drive about 2 miles south on Glenn Springs dirt road, turn right onto Pine Canyon road for another 4+ miles. There are a couple of challenging washes on these dirt road and a vehicle with high ground clearance and off road rated tires is required. There is a small parking area at the trailhead. The trail is more than 2 miles up into the foothills and into Pine Canyon. The last half mile of which is mostly an uphill scramble in a narrow canyon. The falls only flows immediately after a rain. However, the varied views of the valley and looking east from the trail are worth the hike even if the falls is not flowing.

This is not one do do in summer, but was nice in March. Hike up to the place where the falls would be if we had rain. Still there is shade and great views ahead and behind you on the trail.
