It’s an easy drive from the coast to this hidden stream and swim pools. It was busy when we visited but there were plenty of open picnic tables and parking. It would be a nice place to bring a lunch and enjoy the lush landscape and a little swim.

Beautiful views of the valley. We even saw goats! There are restrooms on site. Basically a nice picnic area w fantastic views. We didn’t spend a lot of time there but was a cool view. Easy to park in the lot.

My wife and I took a pleasant walk through this small park. It contained a fair amount of Hawaiian history and it was interesting to read about the early Chinese and Japanese settlers. Stop by if you have a few minutes.

We stopped at this little park on our last day in Maui on the way to the airport, since the Iao Needle was closed. Maybe it was the gloomy day, but it felt a little rundown. There is a parking lot across the street from the park that did not feel like it would be safe. I have heard of a lot of break ends around Maui. However, there is a main parking lot within the park that seemed much more secure. We may be spent 30 minutes here tops. I would say it is a stop that you could definitely skip.

Great park with lovely view of Iao Valley, lots of historic monuments & gardens honoring various ethnicities that immigrated to Maui. I was surprised that it was a bit bigger than I expected.

Had the opportunity to stop by the park and get and out walk in the afternoon. The clouds were forming around the peaks and offered a refreshing and majestic ambiance. The setting is peaceful and a pleasant place to spend some time.

After leaving the Iao Valley State Monument just before all the tour buses arrive, we decided to visit the Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens a short distance away.
The park gets its name from the 1790 battle between Kamehameha I and Kahekili, king of Maui fought along the banks of the Wailuku and Lao streams.
Kepaniwai Park’s Heritage Gardens were established in 1952 to celebrate Hawaii’s diverse immigrant population, it was restored in 1994 to its present-day condition. There are several themed pavilions, gardens, and statues, portraying the Chinese, Japanese, New England, Portuguese, Native Hawaiian, Korean, Puerto Rican, and Filipino people.
Take some time and explore the Japanese tea house, Hawaiian grass shack, Chinese moon gate, Korean Pagoda, New England saltbox, and the Portuguese outdoor oven.
You might be lucky like us and see a large wedding party enjoying themselves and taking photos.
Throughout the gardens are small waterfalls and ponds all fed by the Iao Stream, with tables and barbecue spots. There's also a small grass area by the little stream that runs along the side of the park, and it is also very popular with locals at the weekend.
Because the park is sheltered by the mountains it is protected from wind, giving the whole place a peaceful feeling. We found that the Portuguese garden was very well maintained and full of colorful flowers, and the Korean pavilion was full of stone plaques, as, for the other seven pavilions, you must explore for yourself. But try not to go late or at the weekend when it is full of local people having fun.

TIP: It was a great place to go with young kids, and both the entrance and parking are free.
Please would you give a thumbs up below if you found this review informative? Thank you.

We had extra time before we caught our flight so headed up to Iao Valley State Park and found this little treasure just before it.

Well maintained. Beautiful gardens paying homage to the Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Portuguese settlers.

Peaceful and a great place to learn about the island’s history.

The Heritage park features small pavilions built by ethnocultural groups to celebrate their heritage and history on Maui. There are no guides of multimedia shows, so don't go if you need flash. Locals do like to go there for picnics, and there is a nature center nearby. Note: mosquitoes are sometimes voracious.

Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens in Maui is worth a stop to walk and enjoy the gardens, the nature, and learn about contributions to Hawaiian heritage from people from other countries (Korea, Portugal, China, Japan and the territory of Puerto Rico). The gardens need some maintenance, but still the natural setting in a valley next to a flowing river and mountains makes for a beautiful walk. When we were there in January, we saw quite a few birds in the trees also. Covered shelters are available for picnics. No admission fees and free parking too.
