Budget friendly walk through a ghost town, in a National Park (New River). Signs highlight owners and activities of the buildings. The railroad still goes through it, and the bridge over the river by chance had a group of antique cars drive over it.

Thurmond was once a booming town, but it is now a ghost town. The Amtrak station still is in use, but it was rather quiet. All of the old shops and the train depot were closed, but it was nice to browse through the outdoor grounds. The river was rough, but it was scenic! I enjoyed the historical bridges, but one should beware of the hairpin dirt roads. They were truly dangerous roads and I have experience whereby I drive in Midtown Manhattan with the cab drivers in rush hour!

Even the drive to Thurmond is interesting. The road wends its way through the valley, along the river and next to railroad tracks, seemingly parallel to the 1930's. The drive helps you imagine the life and times of the people that literally fueled the industrial revolution. The NPS has done an excellent job of maintaining and providing informative signs, beginning at the railroad depot and continuing along a street of partially restored buildings. We went late in the season, and with no crowds of tourists it was almost the "ghost town" as some describe it, imagining the shopkeepers and miners coming out of a door.

Thurmond is now protected inside the New River Gorge bridge NP. Definitely worth driving through and walking around. There are people still living on the mountain behind the town. Be prepared before you go, there is absolutely no service shortly past the first turn off to the town.

4.0/5. Visiting this old railroad town that supplied coal and water to freight gave you a sense of what like was like. Cool old building, and homes. The only thing is all the rooms were blocked so you couldn't see them. I can understand this due to all the vandalism. Two trains came through while we looking around. Cool history!

This is the cutest little ghost town I’ve been to so far. ❤️ very cool to see and has information posts about the town. Most of houses are left untouched. There is a gift shop and a small museum in the train station. I definitely recommend coming to see this place at least once in your life. The River that runs by it has great fishing, fun to swim and you can even go rafting on it. There are a lot of cool things to see here!

Train depot has lots of information and the volunteer was so knowledgeable. Thank you so very much.
I was able to see Coal Train coming into town, which was so interesting. So much history to explore.
National Park has done a fine job with restoration. Well done.
I spent over 3 hours exploring, driving to campground and taking in the sites.

This is not the greatest thing you'll ever do, but it is certainly entertaining and worth a few hours of your time. The old depot is now a Park visitor's center and the employee there has lots of information. It's also neat just to walk around the few old business' left standing. Also fun is walking out on the one lane bridge to take pictuers. On the way back out we discovered a beautiful waterfall at one of the pullouts.

While driving on narrow, not very good roads to Thurmond, I wasn't sure what to expect. The National Park had this listed on their New River Gorge map as a spot to check out. Thurmond is an old mining town that is now a ghost town. A few residents still live in Thurmond (only 4 according to the internet). You can park and see the few buildings of a once active coal mining town. It was once a town big enough for a grand hotel that eventually burnt down. The few buildings still remaining include a post office, a bank that changed locations, and a bank that closed during the great depression. The doors to these buildings are closed, but there are informational signs available for reading in the windows. The train depot is now home to the national park visitor center. Train tracks run through the center of town which are still active. On the day we visited, we were lucky enough to see a train. It is great to see the national park doing their best to preserve Thurmond as towns like Thurmond are being wiped off the map.
