There are many sights to see in the New Gorge National Park like the Sandstone Falls, overlook, the New Gorge Bridge and others. This is definitely one of the sites that you should see if you are visiting this area. It is not just one site, the Fayette Station bridge, it is an entire drive with some great spots and pullouts along the way. This drive starts on the north side of the bridge behind the visitor’s center on the road to the right (the one that goes downhill). It is a well paved road that has 2 switchbacks and a pullout or two on the north side and then you are down by the river and driving across the bridge. There is a place to stop by the bridge for those that want to walk across it. There is a park on the south side a little bit down from the bridge. The south side road taking you back up to the main road also has some very nice views along the way. This is a wonderful drive that is well worth the time and effort. I highly recommend this drive and site to any of my fellow travellers in the area.

The road begins at the visitor center and winds along the river's edge below. Great views of the bridge, which is the scenic highlight of the north end of the park (Sandstone Falls is the south end highlight). Depending on the time of day and year the road may be crowded, so don't plan to zip through it just because the mileage is short. Combine with the overlook at the visitor's center for a great first stop in the park.

It's definitely worth driving down this one way road below the bridge! Great views and you can park to get up close to the river. Guge rocks make for great hopping and the white water rapids add to the beauty. A train passed by while we were there. We had the whole place to ourselves.

This drive down into the gorge is well worth the trip (approx. 45 minutes). It gives you a completely different view than from up above. Just know that once you begin the drive you are committed because it is mostly a one-way road.

One of the rangers recommended this "auto tour" to us, and we're so glad she did, as we really enjoyed it. It's called an auto tour because there are various numbered exhibits (signs) as you make your way down and back up. This is the road people had to take to cross the gorge before the new gorge bridge was built in 1977. Without stops the entire trip would take about 45 minutes, but you'll definitely want to stop for some great views of the bridge, the gorge, underneath the bridge, the river. the old bridge at the bottom, and the fayette station rapids. There are supposed to be ruins of two old towns near the bottom, but we could not locate them. The road is mostly one way and fairly narrow, with hairpin turns. The dropoffs into the gorge are not far from the edge of the road, so it's a little bit of a nail-biter, but as long as you pay attention and drive carefully, you'll be okay.

Very cool, worth the drive. Give yourself an hour at least to stop and look around along the way. Hairy drive, be prepared to take your time and drive safely.

We drove to the bottom of the road on a winding 1-way road that was well worth the ride. You get to be directly under the bridge with great views and the water running by...and the OLD bridge is pretty cool as well.

This is a very nice drive into the gorge. We wanted to picnic at the bottom. After you cross the river, there is a parking lot, but only one picnic table. We took our food out onto the rocks to watch the rafters go through the rapids under the bridge. It was a fun (but not very comfortable) picnic lunch.

This old way across the gorge that is now a one way excursion into the gorge. You start on the northeast side at the Visitor's Center. You will wind your way down a "Thank God" now one way to the bottom to cross on an old steel frame, wood road bridge to the pick up location along the river before heading up to Fayetteville. Along the trip you get great views of the bridge including looking up underneath it. Here you can also actually get to the river to put your hand or foot it at the rafting landing. This was really the only place we could get deep in the gorge to feel it surrounding you. Additionally, it is made for pictures. We took some from everywhere. Before this new bridge, this portion of the trip took nearly an hour. Be sure to park at the landing and walk the old bridge for pictures of the new one.

This was a wonderful drive down into the gorge. It takes you down a very nice paved road with many sharp twists and turns. There are several stop off points to take pictures and explore. I enjoyed it so much I took the drive twice! When you’re at Canyon Rim Visitor’s Center, ask them for the CD that provides historical information and points of interest that sync up when playing it on the drive. It took me about an hour and 20 min because I stopped a lot for pictures and to take in the scenery!
