Cowpath and no bathrooms
out de 2021 • Casais
We biked about 22 miles return from Montrose parking area down to Elkins on the Allegheny Highlands rail trail. The trail from the parking area down is mostly two very narrow fine gravel trails that are like cow paths with grass between the two. It's mostly smooth, however. It's open views of some farms and some houses along the trail. About two and a half miles south of Montrose a couple of vicious sounding dogs right close to the trail got very excited when we went by both directions. There are no bathrooms along that portion of the trail and so be prepared. It's really not very scenic but we understand that the north part of the trail from its beginning up around Hendricks is much more scenic than the part that we biked today.

A Nice Bike Ride
jun de 2021
Our trip began in Hendricks which I recommend as it has a nice parking lot with bathrooms and if you are going to Elton, there is a huge downhill on the return. The trail is paved for the first 10 miles and at one point you will ride on a low traffic road (signs say "Bike Route"). There is construction when the trail begins again however this is very passable. The crew has "repaired" the trail with bumpy rocks but that is only for a short distance. Fiber Optics are being laid so you might encounter a few work vehicles on the trail but all are careful and go out of their way to accommodate bikers. Once you reach Elton, there are a couple of good food truck near the gas station. Good fuel for the 50+ mile ride.

Great place to walk or bike
mar de 2019
Nice route to take a quiet walk or bike ride. Easily accessible but feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. Lots of scenery: forests, rivers, open pastures with mountain views.

Great for Biking or Hiking!
out de 2018 • A sós
Love this trail and they are just now completing a new leg of it, a bridge and access from the trail into Elkins proper. From the trailhead, one can walk or bike from Elkins, through Gilman, through Kerens, through Montrose and into Parsons. From Parsons you can go through Hambleton and uphill through the Blackwater Canyon and into Thomas coming out on the Douglas Road. Most of the trail is in a woods type setting and in mid to late October the trees all turn to their familiar fall colors. Wildlife can be viewed along the trail as well. The leg from Elkins to Gilman is paved. From Gilman on its graveled and grassy. As of this month October/2018 the trail (I have been told) has an almost non existent section headed into Parsons from the Montrose side at a place called “Moore”. New highway construction is finding this trail at this point being crossed and used by logging trucks and heavy equipment and it may be hard getting through here now. Soon I am sure it will all be back to normal as construction completes. All in all this is a beautiful trail and one worth your time. You’ll love the natural beauty and the picturesque opportunities you’ll have for your camera!!

Biking, Walking, Running, the trail is for everyone

The Allegheny Highlands Trail goes from the Elkins Depot Welcome Center in Elkins to Thomas. It is a well maintained trail and you can bike the trail all the way through or stop at the different rest areas along the way. If you are coming to Elkins be sure to bring your bike and you will experience the beautiful scenery we have to offer!

Start at the Visitor Center
out de 2017 • Casais
We walked about three miles on the trail and it was paved in the area we walked. We parked in the trail parking lot, so we had a sunny quarter to half mile walk before we found some shade. We did note that there was parking and access from the Visitor's Center so we will park there in the future. The trail was well maintained and level. Easy walking for us.

Absolutely love running on this trail. Clean and the 3 miles of paved stretch is great, flat, and shaded.

Ridin where the rails were
ago de 2016 • A sós
This Rail Trail is excellent for all levels of riders and offers connections to other trails of varying difficulty or to access to Elkins. I have ridden it for close to 20 years even when it was wild riding!
The areas close into Elkins and Parsons are paved so it is wheelchair accessible.

Nice walking/biking trail
ago de 2016 • Casais
Starting just outside of Elkins and easy to get to by foot or bike, the trail goes for 3-4 miles as a paved bike path then turns into a gravel trail, still fine for biking. Much of it is next to a river or creek and meanders through some pretty meadows. It also passes by some fairly ramshackle houses and buildings that are not so gorgeous. It's fairly shady. We only went about 7 miles north but we enjoyed it a lot. Don't expect any amenities - there are none, at least not on the stretch we walked.

this is a great walking trail and depending on your abilities you can make a all day trip out of it. there are no facilities on trail and don't get caught out of town after dark unless you are prepared. not to many grades with some ups and downs
