A piece of history.

This is not much to see, but a true part of American history. There is a placard describing the importance of this location, and a few picnic tables. Twenty minutes is plenty of time to see it all.

A Drive to Find but Very Interesting!!

This was one of the most interesting things we saw during our stay in West Virginia - just thinking about the longevity of this marker and what it has meant to our surveying history. Excellent

The history of the Fairfax grant is interesting as is the history of the Fairfax Stone. The Fairfax Stone is set in WV in the Fairfax Stone State Park.

Our experience: Paved road and re-paved road to the State Park. This WV State Park is an excellent picnic location.

A small out of the way park
ago de 2018 • Amigos
This small park is about 2 miles off the main road. There's a marker at the headwaters of the Potomac just a small spring actually. Not much to do here except view the marker and the small spring. Not a very well travelled park but it is in a beautiful out of the way setting.

Head of the Potomac

An historic site in colonial America. The Fairfax Stone marks the start of the Potomac River and the western boundary of Maryland. Semi-hard to find but worth the effort.

Yes you can see the beginning of the Potomac!

The road through the national forest is not in perfect shape, but is completely passable with a city car. Slow down so that you can avoid the pot holes. There is a lovely lawn and ample parking at the spring marked by the Fairfax Stone. It could make a nice location for a picnic in warmer weather.

VA (WV) And MD History Lesson

In a small WV State Park, visit the Fairfax Stone.

This four-acre park is the location of the Fairfax Stone, a surveyor’s marker and boundary stone used in the 1700s to settle a boundary dispute over land in the English colonies of Maryland and Virginia.

One of the oldest markers in the United States, this stone rests at the junction of Tucker, Grant and Preston counties and marks the boundary between Maryland and West Virginia.

The Fairfax Stone marks the western boundary of land granted to Lord Fairfax by the King of England in the 1700s. Two centuries later, the stone was used to determine the boundary between West Virginia and Maryland.

Drive several miles north of Thomas, and then drive two miles to the Fairfax Stone.

Enjoy History.

Not much to see
nov de 2017 • Casais
This monument is not in Davis, WVa. It is 2.5 miles off Rt 219 9 miles north of Davis in the area called Eglon, WV. There is a small marker and ditch that must be the spring that is the beginning of the Potomac River. It was not flowing when we visiting so it was just a ditch. There are no rest rooms or anything else there.
