The scenery is awe-inspiring, and the isolation from civilization gives it an other-worldly feeling. Rainbow Falls is spectacular. Stehekin is only accessible by ferry. Once there, there is a bus that only runs a couple times a day or you can rent bicycles. You need to be prepared for the lack of cell service or wifi, so don't go when you have an important business deal or family crisis going on. The hotel is rustic, no TV or refrigerators in the rooms. Nice, comfortable beds though. No room service or cleaning during your stay either.

There are great views without having to go much of any distance for scenery and places to relax. We loved the 24 hours we spent there.

First time experience for us. Had lunch at the landing restaurant which had outdoor and indoor seating. Depending on the time of your visit we would suggest eating inside as the bees were very aggressive on the patio. Very pretty area with lots of local lore and artists.

The Lady of the Lake ferry will drop you here. By the way, all the deck hands on the ferry are women. There is a restaurant and a general store at the landing. Also a post office near by and a gas pump. You can rend bicycles, kayaks and cars just down the road. There is a lode and a visitor center run by the Forrestry Service. And, if you have to, there is even internet available from the general store for $5 a day.

This review is only for the Stekekin ferry trip. We left Fields Landing at 1:00 over the 4th of July weekend and returned from Stehekin at 10:40. Besides the cost being expensive with the add ons for bringing our dog and 2 bikes, the boat was comfortabe. The 2 young men were compedent . They were pleasant , loaded and unloaded all the baggage and did a great job driving and docking the boat. The only problem was that they did nothing for helping with lowering the risk of spreading Covid-19. They did not wear a mask. They handled all the luggage with no use of hand sanitizer. All the passagers (inside a nearly full ferry) wore masks except 2. A women asked the workers about mask wearing and stated it was required in Washington State. The ferry driver replied that wearing a mask was not a law and he thought people should do what they were comfortable doing.

After hiking along the PCT trail for a few days you will be ready to eat real food. Our party of five hikers just did a 7-day in-and-out from Rainy Pass to Stehiken and back, so we're not 'thru' hikers. But you will see lots of them here. This is a great stop for the hardy crew doing the long hike along the Pacific Crest Trail and you'll hear lots of stories being shared.
The Dining Room is a friendly place and the staff are great. The food is alright, but don't expect fine dining. Sometimes the fresh stuff runs out before the supply boat comes in. I found this out when I ordered the Fresh Fruit Bowl. Oh well, it wasn't great but the coffee is good. We had a couple of dinners there as we stayed two nights. Some of the salad dishes looked ok and I had a big piece of grilled salmon for $8. I thought it was a good deal.
If you are planning to catch the bus out the next day the dining room will have your pre-ordered breakfast ready at 7:00 am so you can make the bus at 8:00 easily.

It is lovely to ride bikes along Stehekin Landing. A unique location with views of the water. There are docks for boats ($5 per day federal dock permit).

Every trip to the Landing is a blessing. This time of year there are a variety of water birds at the head of the lake in the shallows, including trumpeter swans who winter over there. Whether it is cloudy or sunny, whether the mountains are in view or shrouded in fog and clouds, the view is always beautiful.

Stehekin Lansing is a spot out of a travel book. It’s only accessible by boat or float plane. We took the ferry and only had three hours there. I would have liked more time but this was a last minute decision and rooms weren’t available. It’s a great spot.

When we started planning our trip to the Northwest two years ago, neither of us had heard of Stehekin. Once we learned of the town, however, it immediately went on our itinerary.

Stehekin may be reached either by boat or by foot. Some literature includes access by seaplane, but it doesn’t appear as if seaplanes are currently operating on Lake Chelan.

We rode the slow boat to Stehekin and returned via the express the following day. This meant we had approximately 24 hours in the community. We enjoyed almost every minute of those hours.

Upon arrival we took the red bus tour to Rainbow Falls and the Stehekin Pastry Company. The park ranger also explained about some of the other features in the area. It was a good introduction to the Stehekin Valley, but it did feel somewhat rushed.

We visited the National Park Visitor Center and spent some time viewing the exhibits. The center also has a few gift items for sale.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent relaxing and enjoying the surroundings. After dinner, we walked along the lakeshore and watched the evening fall upon the mountains.

In the morning we ate breakfast at the lodge. If there was one disappointment during our stay, it was the amount of time it took for meals. Service at the restaurant was very slow – especially for breakfast. If we had to do it over, I think we would have just picked up a snack at the general store and skipped the 45 minutes we spent at breakfast.

We rented a Polaris Ranger for an hour which gave us the opportunity to explore further up the valley than we had the previous day on the bus. Bicycle rentals are also available.

Afterward, Mrs B visited The House that Jack Built which sells goods crafted by local artisans. She was largely able to complete her Christmas shopping with this one stop.

Soon thereafter it was time to board the boat for the trip down lake.

Here are a few items that may be of interest.

A trip to Stehekin, because of its isolation, is not inexpensive. Lodging and food costs are higher than normal and the cost of the boat ride to and from Stehekin must also be factored in. However, the experience is unique, so we deemed it worthy of expanding our budget when we planned our trip. We were glad that we did.

I would recommend spending at least one night in Stehekin so that one can experience more of what this place offers. The evening along the lakefront was one of the best memories from the stay and it would have been missed if we had been day-trippers.

If at all possible, try to take some time to talk with one the employees or residents of the valley. I was fortunate enough to speak with the lodge manager for over ten minutes and learned far more about Stehekin than I could have by any other method.

Finally, although there are plenty of reminders of modern life in Stehekin, there are also many reminders of a time gone by – far more than are usually found elsewhere. Their presence offers a welcome invitation to kick back and relax in this beautiful setting.
