This is indeed and interesting place to visit. Not much remains but there are some haunting sites, such as the old cemetery, and ancient indigenous drinking points to see. Somehow they managed to survive the gold lust that saw most of the countryside dug up beyond recognition. The old Crimea mine is now locked off but there is a great vantage point to see what was an stunning open cut. All in all a great place to visit and explore.

Whoop historic area is the site of early gold mining. Getting orientated is a little tricky, but once you are there is plenty of information to provide background to the site.

We walked the 1.2km Balaklava Mine loop: very informative although mine access is mie listed within the pit: however, the back entrance to the tunnel was open which would give access to the mine area.

Never knew about this place: found it fascinating

Fascinating history

We were in the area for a weekend away visiting wineries and were really surprised to find this amazing gold mining heritage site. The mine is fascinating and a visit to the cemetery gives visitors a glimpse of the hardships these workers and their families had to endure. Well worth a visit to the area to explore an amazing historical site.

Whroo is one of those off the beaten track locations that must not be missed if you are in the area.It is an old gold mining town near Nagambie that has the old church still standing which now is a rangers office. In its heyday several hundred people lived and worked there and the history is told at the ranger station. The remains of the Balaclava open cut gold mine is evident and in its heyday it really was a goldmine .If coming from Nagambie you cross the historic wooden bridge which is a great photo opportunityit itself ,bu tfrom there it is a dirt road which can be slippery if raining. You can get there from Rochester as well.Dont rely on your gps.Several walks are available but beware of snakes in the summer. Picnic facilities available.
