Closed for maintenance

A nice weir worthy of a photo or two but couldn't access the walkway over the top due to maintenance. A bit dissapointing but there is a nice park for families at the adjacent reserve.

Thunderous Water
abr de 2021
Not overly visited but definitely worth going. The weir can be approached from either side of the river as both have car parks. The Goulburn Valley Hwy. side is the nicest and has a green grassed area & park for picnics.

Also, there is a walk way across the entire length of the weir so it really does not matter which side its approached from. Walking the metal grated floor gets you up close & personal with the water thundering through and hows is constructed. Note though, the gates close at 4pm

Historical Weir
nov de 2020
Construction of the weir began in 1887 and was completed in 1891 and was the first major irrigation diversion project in Australia and considered significant at the time as its image appeared on the reverse side of the Australian half sovereign and the ten-shilling bank note. The weir also contained the first hydro electric system in the southern hemisphere. In 1987 a major refurbishment was completed. The weir raises the Goulburn River to a level where water can be supplied by gravity to a number of significant nearby irrigation areas. Not that well presented but historically interesting and significant.

This long wooden bridge should be preserved, rebuilt at all cost, its a big asset to the town. I have grave fears it may not last another 20 years,... see it while you can still drive over it.

Interesting!

This is well worth a visit although not that well signposted. The weir is one of a few you can actually walk across so this allows for good photos.

A lovely drive
out de 2019
We drove via the bridge so ended up on the wrong side of the weir but it doesn’t matter as you can walk across the top of the weir. One of the oldest in the state. The other side has a lovely picnic area.

Worth the stop

Goulburn Weir plays an important role in local irrigation. The weir is open (to be walked across) during the day. You can observe the different water levels for the upstream and downstream river and the irrigation channel. You can also see the mix of old old and new technology. You can park right next to the weir.

Exploring Nagambie

We saw this weir from the west side which is not well signed posted or with as many amenities as the other side. Still worth seeing the weir and understanding it’s importance to agriculture in Victoria.

Pioneering ingenuity
jul de 2019 • Casais
The Forefathers who originally thought of this were probably ahead of their time but secured a water catchment that is greatly needed today!
The power of the water flowing through the five weir gates when we were there was amazing and created a great white water spectacle. The noise itself was unbelievably loud.
You can see the new and old technology atop the gantry and is well worth the walk across to the other side.
Plenty of great photos opportunities available and a picnic ground and playground equipment for the young ones.
