This was a neat old cemetery. It is the final resting place of some notable area families, politicians, and war heroes. The monuments and tombstones are pieces of art in their own right. The cemetery is about 13 acres and is an easy walk to stroll through the entire thing. It buttresses up against the Knoxville National Cemetery.

This is a beautiful cemetery. The monuments and gravestones are beautiful, some ornate and some simple. I loved that some adversarial families are buried here together, as well as some Union and Confederate soldiers. I highly recommend a walk through this cemetery as well as the National Cemetery next door.

Cemetery quietly celebrates with each statuary many city founders, Civil War soldiers and regional contributors buried in this lovely historic place.

We happened upon the cemetery on our way to the veterans cemetery nearby. Lots of interesting history here. It is a garden setting with unique headstones. It is well worth a visit. I would definitely go during the middle of the day to have the best experience. An early morning or early evening visit could encounter some locals that tend to hang out in the cemetery.

My husband and I found this beautiful old cemetery on a Civil War driving tour through Knoxville. We were delighted to find we could actually drive through the wrought iron gates and around the cemetery. We were the only ones there on a Sunday morning and it was delightfully quiet. The graves date from the early 1800s and we thought this area was well taken care of.

Very important history here but very unkept and not in the best part of town. It's, still a great stroll but go during the day.

You can judge a civilization by the way they treat their dead...I think I heard or read that some time ago. Anyway a really interesting place which unfortunately needs help. A lot of homeless hand around there and leave beer cans strewn about, Trees uprooted have destroyed some markers. Something cool is some markers have QUERTY code stickers on the markers which when clicked reveal the history of the deceased.

The cemetery was established in the 1850s and many of Knoxville's well known families and leaders are interred here. The range of monuments is fascinating. There are lantern tours during different times of the year. It's well worth checking the website to see if there are any upcoming events such as the Carriage and lantern tour. Huge trees offer some shade. Lots of hills and old landscaping, so might not be suitable for everyone. There is a circular drive, however, and usually available to car traffic although the entry gate is narrow.

I love to visit old cemeteries and could spend hours walking through them. However on the day we visited we did not get out and walk around the Old Gray Cemetery because the grass was knee high. We did drive through and enjoyed what we could see. But it was disappointing that it was not better maintained.

The first time I took the bus and I was in awe of all the history here by reading all the old tombstones and looking at the ornate headstones that are NOT made anymore! The headstones were made by great artisans! I saw a fig tree, but not any homeless people. I did see a groundskeeper that was using the weedeater and throwing some branches and trash away!

The second time I came through the front and no one was around! The cemetery is 13 acres big! I read the markers at the front and saw the rough road, I would not recommend any kind of vehicle be brought in here as the road has deep cracks and is narrow! When I was leaving, I did see some homeless females coming in. I do NOT know how they can sleep in a cemetery..I would have nightmares! After I did leave, I had a cup of coffee across the street,
