We took a kayaking tour offered by Audubon. 2-3 hour morning tour. It was private, only the two of us and the guide. Fantastic tour. Very easy paddling. We saw gators (they’re apparently “shy” and avoid people), snakes, a huge spider, turtles, and so many gorgeous dragonflies. Forest is otherworldly. Very unique experience.

Beautiful remote swamp lands. The entrance is a little off the beaten path. But stay with your GPS & you will get there! The center where you pay your entrance fee is small but choc full interesting things for adults and children alike. The $8 adult, $5 child fee is very reasonable. The center has so many touchable experiences for the whole family. The staff is friendly and informative. The have a “tame” blue jay that is very entertaining. And an adorable (yes adorable) opossum that is the pet of a staff member. Very eye opening. The center has clean bathrooms & small snacks & drinks for purchase. You see the swamp via a well-maintained boardwalk. Half way through is a peaceful lake. The entire path is close to 2 miles total. Many opportunities to see wildlife. Great day with family or friends. No bugs this time of year!

Thank you so much for visiting and we're glad to hear you had such a wonderful time! John James, our resident Blue Jay, is doing great in his training and will hopefully be going out to do more educational programs soon. It's great that you got to be here on a day where Lily, our education opossum, was here; she helps change people's minds about the species and gives us an opportunity to talk about their environmental significance. We hope to see you again soon for another great visit!

The Audubon Center provided a naturalist to lead my group of 10 women on a walk of the two-mile boardwalk. The scenery was like a miniature version of Congaree National Park. We felt we benefited from the guides expertise and really enjoyed our time here. Allow at least an hour, but more time would be better. The terrain is flat and easy so anyone can complete the walk with enough time.

The Japanese call walking in the woods forest bathing. This is an easy 2 mile walk through a remarkable swamp. The entire trail is raised board walk. There are old growth Cypress trees, your neck will hurt from looking up. This is an Audubon sanctuary so birding is great.Don't rush look in the trees in the water and on ground, the longer you look the more you will see. Sit on a bench and listen the sounds are amazing.

This park is operated by the Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy and there is an entrance fee. We walked the easy 1.75 mile boardwalk thru the largest remaining stand of virgin Bald cypress and Tupelo Gum swamp forest left anywhere in the world. It was enjoyable walk amongst the palmettos, cypress and other plant life. We saw lots of large spiders in huge webs and little lizards. The park was surprisingly unbuggy. There are naturalist guided Boardwalk Tours, bird walks and canoe and kayak tours available. A worthwhile stop.

Hello,

My wife and I were driving from Orlando up to Baltimore, Md. and decided to stop at this Audubon facility and we were very happy to have done so. We arrived late in the day but felt no pressure from Emily Church and the rest staff. Once we left we decided to stake out at the end of the driveway in hopes to spot a Painted Bunting as we had heard that they have frequented that specific area in recent months. I can confidently say that we probably overstayed our welcome as we were there for awhile, however another staff member, Austin Trousdale, as he was leaving reassured us that we were bothering no one and encouraged us to continue on our quest. (Which I can proudly say was a success! Very cool.)

On top of all of this, I reached back out to Austin once home in Maryland and asked him to send us some pictures of the apparel and gifts in the shop, worried it was too much to ask, and sure enough without hesitation I had pictures in my email and pleasant emails thanking us for wanting to support the Audubon Society in South Carolina.
A great experience.

Thank you to everyone at the Francis Beidler Forest.

Sincerely,
The Hanzliks

We are so happy that you enjoyed your visit with us and that you were able to see the Painted Bunting that you came for. The staff here never wants anyone to feel that their time is rushed, as it is easy to get caught up in the beauty that the swamp provides. Austin is always willing to go above and beyond for any guest and he was glad that he could help you with your purchases. We hope to see you again soon!

We visited this park on a very hot day and we are pleased to say the shade from the trees made it bearable and believe-it-or-not bugs were not a problem. The whole boardwalk was exactly the right length and the free guidebook is just the right amount of info. We spent nearly 2 hours and highly recommend.

Nice visitor area with Audubon guides, maps and gifts opens to a 3 mile or so boardwalk loop through the Cyprus and tupelo. Easy walk on this very well maintained boardwalk with signs along the way about the flora and fauna. There is an observation tower near the lake. This is a wonderful place for birding and seeing a Cyprus swamp. We saw a couple of school classes touring with Audubon guides.

Thank you for visiting and enjoying your time on our boardwalk! We often have school groups coming through for field trips around that time and our guides do a great job educating them about the wonders of the swamp. Please come back to see us soon!

We knew arriving in the afternoon was not prime time, but we were hopeful to seeing the prothonotary warbler. The boardwalk is really great anytime of the day. Our first sighting was of a cottonmouth lounging on a log - away from the boardwalk.
When we got to the end of the boardwalk at the lake we could here a warbler - we were patient and he came very close. We kept flitting around and the flew off. We considered ourselves lucky to one in the middle of the afternoon. We actually saw a couple more, but they were further off.
As we were getting ready to leave the boardwalk we saw a yellow-crown night heron catching a crayfish. That was really neat to see. We were not able to get there early, but still were happy to have one and able to see the warbler. They are special and here is one of the only places to see them. It was worth eh $10 to get in.

We're happy to hear that you were able to have a sighting of the Prothonotary Warbler you wanted to see! We agree, they are very special and we are lucky that they use our swamp for breeding. Earlier visits in the day means cooler weather so there is a chance of seeing more animals out but the Cypress and Tupelo trees in the swamps are beautiful to look at all day long. Thank you for visiting and we hope you'll come visit us again soon!
