Would be a nice thing to do if any of it was open.
jan de 2020 • A sós
In a time when people are looking for something safe and socially distant to do, This place is pretty much closed. The Drive was great and would be something great and safe to do right now in the midsts of the pandemic but it is closed indefinitely along with most of the trails. Very disappointed.

Short hike around marsh at Wildlife Refuge
out de 2020
The visitor center and the scenic drive is currently closed. There are hiking trails open. We went on a shorter hike around a marsh. There is a nice sized dock with binoculars attached to see the wildlife. We spotted one large gator and one small one. There were also interesting birds and ducks there. Sign posted that says hunters with permits are allowed on property in October and November - wear bright colors. We didn't see another soul but next time I won't in go in hunting season. We also will allot more time for a longer hike. Signage to marsh was difficult to find from Visitors Center.

Great Activity for Cooped Up People
mai de 2020 • Família
This is a beautiful spot for a leisurely drive. Many opportunities to hike. Bring lots of bugspray, water, and sunscreen if you intend to go on the trails. One portapotty at the beginning of the drive.

A Refuge to go to During This Isolation Time
mar de 2020
During this time of isolation., this is a great place to take the kids on an adventure.

You stay in your car, there is no physical contact except looking out the car window for alligators, birds and beautiful scenery. Driving your car slowly for the three miles can be a great adventure. Have the kids count the alligators. We counted 26, unbelievable!

Serene and beautiful
fev de 2020
We started at the visitor center and obtained information about the reserve, which is a few miles farther down the road. We enjoyed a leisurely drive around the 5 mile nature reserve loop. The reserve is full of alligators, herons, birds and other wildlife associated with marsh, wetland and coastal environments. You can move at your own pace and there are plenty of places to stop and watch wildlife and take photos. This is an interesting and peaceful way to enjoy a few hours of nature.

Wildlife Drive
mar de 2020
I began at the visitor center for the Refuge seeking directions to a four mile "wildlife drive" because I did not have enough time in my schedule for any of their trails on that day. I will admit that I have a pretty crummy sense of direction, but I found the staff at the visitor center less than helpful. While I did find the entrance to the wildlife drive, it was not at all clear that I would. That lack of direction is the only reason to have rated this one 4 stars instead of 5. My suggestion (if the refuge reads their reviews) is to have the entrance to the wildlife drive placed as a location on Google maps (and other digital maps) so that an address to the entrance can be given for those not familiar with the area. Otherwise, this wildlife drive was fantastic! The four miles contain some truly beautiful land and I saw a good bit more wildlife than I thought I might considering it was a very cold winter day.

Great place to see a wide variety of wildlife in their natural habitat - especially birds
ago de 2019
I have been here in summer and winter (August and January). There has been a wide variety of birds. I am an amateur photographer so was excited to get some amazing shots.

I will say in the summer, it can be VERY Hot with very limited shade. I only did the drive through and did not really walk any of the trails. So great for those with limited mobility as most of it you can see from the car/road.

As a photographer, I spent a few hours. If you are just driving through, I would say to allow at least 30-60 minutes.

Rich environment for water fowl and gators
jan de 2020
This is a wonderful refuge. There are a lot of birds, wading birds, ducks and alligators. There are a few walking trails, 4-5 miles long, on level ground. The visitor center has a very well done 10 minute movie about the history of the refuge. Strangely enough, they used to grow rice here. They have a nice little gift shop, and a wildlife and history display. There is a nature drive, that has a cool photo blind, however, due to hurricane damage 2 years ago, the drive is only open on Saturdays and Sundays when construction is not happening. Once the drive is open permanently, this refuge will deserve 5 stars.
