What a fantastic time to come to a historical building and enjoy the company, and drinks.

This historical landmark has been truly restored by the hands of masters! Their fine attention to detail, friendly demeanor and willingness to share history in the north and York County region.

Mark this on your list of go to places. It’s worth the stop.

Great little family friendly Celtic heritage celebration! There were Irish foods to try, Guinness beer, tons of music and dance performances, along with crafts, tours of the Dill Plantation including reenactors.

I visited the day of the pickle festival that was going in town. This is a small property, but they do a very good job of giving you a taste of what life was like way back in the day.

A great place to visit for First Friday. It's BYOB and only costs $10 per person which includes set-ups and snacks, plus live entertainment. Whiskey tasting is also available for a donation. Learn about our ancestors in a fun environment.

This historic building is the home of the Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society (NYCHAPS). It is not a restaurant. However, it is open on Sunday afternoons to guided tours. Very interesting place that is part of the community history and worth a visit if you are into that sort of thing.

A terrific place to learn of the pioneer history of the area. Dill's Tavern offers classes and exhibits for all ages. The volunteer staff is friendly and helpful and you can usually find someone doing something with pioneer tools. Balderdash in the fall is especially fun. Local home brew beer folks bring their wares for tasting. For a reasonable fee, you can taste as many beers as you like. Food and entertainment is also available. Great place for learning and fun.

We have meant to visit the restored Dill's Tavern for years, ever since we saw it was undergoing renovation. Our hourlong tour showed that the group that manages it is doing more than just restoring, they are researching and interpreting. The building is back to being fully functional, but beyond that they are also restoring the outbuildings, not just for looks but also for function. For example, they recreated the oven in the back yard, but rather than just make it pretty they also fired it up and baked bread in it ("We found that we were putting way too much wood in it. A digital thermometer showed us with 800 degrees! No wonder all the loaves were black on the bottom!"). They are building a contemporary still, since that was how the owners made their fortune, and (pending town council approval) plan to hold seminars on making whiskey and comparing it to other distillation methods of the period, with samples. They mix their own paint to match the period. ("Except the white lead paints. That stuff is dangerous. Plus it's illegal now.") When they need heat, they light up the existing fireplaces (some of which draw badly -- you can see the soot marks on the wall). The whole thing is still coming along, but they have done a great job and it should be a marvelous visit in the future. We'll be back!

Who would ever have thought that small-town Dillsburg in south-central Pennsylvania would have a plantation? 260 years ago, it did! Today, you can visit what's left of it and learn the history of the founding of this modern-day town.

It is located 30 minutes north of Gettysburg, along Route 15, and 20 minutes south of Harrisburg. Dill's Tavern is a large stone building on Baltimore Street that has been restored by the Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society to appear as it did in its heyday. You can visit the original tavern, which was built in 1794, and tour the additions to the building, which were completed in 1800 and 1819. You can also see the Squirrel-Tail bake oven, tobacco leaves drying in the woodshed, check out the garden and apple orchard, and visit the Wheelwright's Shop. When this shop is being used, you can watch blacksmiths, gunsmiiths, or carpenters, all using the tools of 19th century America.

The most recent addition is a 200 year old log barn being re-constructed on the property. Just two blocks down the street, you can visit the Maple Shade Barn where the Historical Society has their archives, museum and gift shop. This property is where J.E.B. Stewart and his men arrived on July 1, 1863, on their way to Gettysburg.

This is a hands-on historical attraction so there are no velvet ropes keeping you away from the furniture. You may touch, learn and enjoy! The attractions are open for tours from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, April through November.
