Sawley Abbey was founded in 1146 on land given by William, third Lord Percy. The Percys, Northumberland’s greatest family, remained patrons of the abbey for much of its existence. In a lovely little village with the River Ribble running close by. The grounds in the abbey are well kept and it makes for a pleasant visit for about 30 minutes

These interesting Abbey ruins that are great to look around and are completely free. Plenty of roadside parking available.
The only reason I didn't give a 5 is because most of the information boards are badly water damaged and need replacing.
Sadly, this is often seems tobe the case for their free sites.

Stayed at the Spread Eagle Pub, which is literally just across the road. Loads of free parking, free entry to the ruins, and plenty of maps/descriptions, so you can get a good idea of whereabouts you're standing and what room/area you would have been in. Excellent spot for some photo opportunities, either of your dog or your missus. I got plenty of the dog. Spend as long as you want there, then go for a pint by the river at the Spread Eagle. Happy days!!!!

This beautiful old ruin is located not far off the A59 in the centre of the village of Sawley. There is no specific carpark but there was plenty of space, on the day we arrived, alongside the road. It is free to enter.
It is quite a large and beautifully peaceful place with great views of the surrounding countryside and Pendle hill. There are information boards but unfortunately some are worn and illegible.

There is something relaxing about walking through these ruins. We take the kids and the dog & just let them have a bit of time exploring. The grounds are nice and enclosed with spectacular views.
This is one of favourite places because I feel stress free after an hour or so here

I have been visiting the ruins since childhood as I came from a village nearby. I usually have a walk round after dining in The Spread Eagle. The early of Derby was commissioned by Henry V111 to destroy the abbey.
There are some graves among the ruins. Also a collection of stone laid out on shelves to the left as you enter the gates. The latrines and a kitchen area with fireplace are both interesting.
The site is managed by English Heritage.

Lovely ares with a river nearby and a lovely pub next door makes this place extra special . You have to imagine the abby because it's just ruins but the area and pub makes up for the journey

This is a great example of an early Abbey and you will have a much better appreciation if you do some homework before you visit. The signage is rather scant and doesn't explain nearly enough. This was originally a large one and by the side of the road, so also took in travelers and had an infirmary. There was a significant choir, large kitchen with remnants of great ovens, and an impressive drainage system. There is also a display of stones that have been recovered on site and a nice pub/restaurant across the street!

Sadly, another proof of the vandalism of Henry VIII. But it's an interesting and peaceful place to immerse yourself in tranquility!
