Advertised more as a cycle trail, we walked a section of the Oyster Bay trail between Herne Bay and Reculver and back on a mid-week day in July. We both started and finished our walk in Herne Bay walking the section as an ‘out and back’ exercise.
Staring at Herne Bay Pier, we followed the promenade past the Central Bandstand and East cliff bay toward the distant towers of Reculver church. On the way we passed the statues of Amy Johnson and Barnes Wallis, the imposing clock tower and an attractive terrace of Georgian houses looking very smart.
The trail then heads away from the town along quiet shingle beaches but with a good concrete promenade giving a good walking surface. As you proceed, the Reculver ruins gradually disappear behind the looming Bishopstone Cliffs.
Just before you reach the Bishopstone Cliffs, the walker has options, the first being to take the tarmac ramp up to Reculver Drive (which we did on the outward leg), or continue along the promenade to a set of steps which takes you directly up to Bishopstone cliffs (which route we took on the return leg).
Ascending the tarmac ramp the route takes a winding path through the trees before joining Bishopstone Glen, and we followed this to Manor Road passing the Bishopstone Fairy woods in the trees to your left. At the end of manor road there is a footpath which takes you to the cliff edge but we continued along Haven Drive before turning left into Bishopstone Lane. At the end of Bishopstone lane you will find yourself on an expansive wildflower meadow and here we found skylarks joyfully giving out their song on the wing above us. From here the path leads to Reculver and we got some lovely views of the ruined church from an elevated viewpoint as we approached.
On our return journey we took a different route via the cliff edge footpath which bypassed the hosing estate we walked through earlier and brought us back to the promenade via a set of steps.
A nice coastal walk of just under 4 miles in either direction mostly with a good walking surface though there is some field walking over Bishopstone cliffs and this section also has some hilly sections in what otherwise is a mostly flat walk. Fairly easy to follow in that it is a coastal walk, we didn’t experience too many problems following the route. Public toilets are available in Herne Bay and Reculver.

Fabulous coastal walk taking in beaches, cliffs, and allsorts to see. The walk itself is well signposted, flat in most places, and lots of interest along the way. It was definitely helped by the fact we had blue skies even though walking at the end of September. Good fun looking out to sea watching the various ships as I head out towards the channel. Some great places for a picnic along the way too

A good bike ride with younger children, although mostly grass. Some interesting sculptures along the way and really bracing sea air. It's quite exposed and can be hard when the wind is up. Toilets and a coffee shop (that you'll have to check if it's open) await at reculver, plus a cafe that does a good fry up. Take water for your walk and take your litter home. Not many bins on the route.

Interesting nature area where Swalecliffe brook meets the sea at the western end, and Reculver country park the other end. Beach almost all shingle & not exciting.

This is a lovely walk. Its not too long and mostly flat. The views are just stunning and we were blessed with a very sunny day.

This is manicured walking. Beautiful section of coastline, always something of interest along the way. Easy strolling, gentle ups and downs. Keep to the path and don't go near the cliff edge as there is always the danger of unstable ground (undercut, so you could be standing on a very thin piece of earth by the very edge without realising). It's perfectly safe if you keep to the obvious path.
Lovely walking, walking for dogs and for cyclists.

This is a good long walking or biking route. Plenty to see as you pass along, especially as it is costal. Always enjoyable is Herne Bay as you go by.

We walked 4 miles plus from Herne Bay to Reculver which was exhausting. But it was a delightful surprise to experience the stunning views & pleasant pathways through Reculver Country Park.

Can you catch your own oysters here?

No. I remember a few people were on swalecliffe beach a while back picking them up and the oyster company pointed out it was not allowed. You do occasionally find a few on the shore and youd be very brave to eat one!
