Who knew that here were so many tomb/grave stones around! The comprehensive display of artefacts and explanations of possible functions were fascinating. The view from the tower across the water was fabulous.
The staff were friendly and helpful.

If you are interested in the Romans this is a must! It is the scene of a time team dig, with videos to watch..loads of roman artifacts , gravestones and engraved alter stones with translations. A tower to climb that gives a view of the earthworks, now under grass but a few models inside the museum show how the settlement would have looked.also info on the family that founded the museum and preserved the artifacts in the 1800 s. Activities for children such as writing their own wishes for various attributes they would like the roman gods to grant them!
Gift shop has loads of reasonably priced gifts such as posters of all the roman chasers and roman numerals...helmet shaped thimbles horrible history books etc.
Maryport also a nice little seaside town.with go carts etc...worth spending a day here.
Museum is EXCELLANT value for money with helpful staff.

Fascinating small museum, just outside the town of Maryport. 2 rooms packed with well described artefacts, the 17 Roman altars to the god Jupiter particularly interesting. Excellent descriptions and 4 informative videos. Good value for money at just £4 for adults.

Visited in the last week of August as a medium family group. We really enjoyed the museum and all the fascinating artefacts, it gave us a great insight into the area too. Staff were also very friendly, the lady at the front desk was very attentive and this really made our visit pleasant. The viewing platform was also excellent as we were able to see far into the distance, we had a look for the Isle of Man. We hope to visit again soon.

A very interesting place to visit telling the story from the edge of the Roman empire. The museum is an absolute credit to volunteers and people who look after it.

This is a lovely place to spend an hour or 2 looking at the amazing altar collection and finds, and to sit and watch footage of excavations. Cosy library of Roman literature to read through. Building blocks and activity table for kids super fun. Very reasonable entry cost. Highly recommend a guided tour, so friendly and knowledgeable - thanks to Nick, my 7 year old found it engaging. A must visit.

We live locally and visit often. This is the extreme end of the Hadrian's Wall defences and a part often missed by tourists. There are many interesting displays of finds from the surrounding fields during several digs, including a Time Team special. It is mostly indoors and very suitable for a wet day but the outside watch tower is well worth going outside, even in poor weather. You can imagine the Romans watching out for those terrible barbarians across the Solway.

One of the best community museums I have visited. Excellent displays of fascinating finds, very clearly explained with good audio-visual materials too. Lots for the children. Helpful and enthusiastic staff.

An interesting building, but the lack of space may prevent future development of the collection.

The best value £4 I've spent in a long while.

A large collection of local roman history with so much information provided. The items on display are vast, varied and well displayed. A great place to visit as a family, and I would recommend you go up to the Tower on your way out for fantastic views across to Scotland. The building was very clean, the staff very helpful and friendly, the gift shop choice had a nice varied selection with something for everyone. An excellent attraction and brilliant value for money.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit to the museum and Maryport. We agree that the views over the Solway Firth towards Scotland are spectacular. This part of the Cumbrian coast sees some amazing sunsets, if you are ever lucky to be in Maryport for the evening. I will pass on your comments to the staff and volunteers, they will be pleased that you noticed all their hard work in keeping the museum clean and welcoming for all our visitors.
