My husband said not enough trains! Lol

Nice to have electricity…
but only 2 pit toilets when we were here.,…the flush toilet and shower facilities were closed and locked with no explanation. That was disappointing as I’d planned on showering here and my husband has mobility issues and pit toilets can be a challenge for him.
I only gave it a 3 as it was not what we were expecting without the facilities and we would have booked elsewhere
Otherwise I’d have given it a 4

A picturesque view of a river carved valley awaits you as you descend towards this campsite. A rocky beach with junipers for shade is an oasis for travellers. Knowing that you are camping alongside a busy transport route is important for campers expectations.
The roar of the river and the winds might provide you with the white noise you need to sleep, but expect trains every 30 minutes or so.

Snugly nestled between two active train tracks, this little strip of gravel provides wonderful access to the full desert heat due to the delightful lack of shade trees. The cozy spacing of the sites, and modern open concept allows you to become intimately familiar with your neighbour's actions and routines. We revelled in the ironic whimsy of the name "Juniper Beach" as the park contained only one Juniper tree and no beach. We completed all nine minutes of hiking trails, whose beauty and grandure left us absolutely breath-full. And finally, after a day of heat and sweat, the absence of showers and washroom facilities allowed to bask in the full rustic olfactory experience well into the night.

Do not go.

Beautiful beach. Clean and crystal clear water. Plenty parking and ideal beach for wedding or birthday pictures.

The arid sage brush covered hills and unusual formations were great as well as the Thompson River. The water level was high when we were there and a bit wild and cold for swimming. It's off the main highway and the campsite is small and intimate. The outhouses were clean and the grounds well taken care of. There were trees for shade when it gets very hot. In most aspects the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The bad part was the non-stop train traffic in both directions on either side of the campground. the campsite is in a bend in the tracks where the carriages squeal as they go around this bend (most trains have a hundred carriages). It is hard to hear each other talk at these times. This goes on day and night! By the second day we had enough.
The other thing that really bugged us was that we had booked a site (only one available) weeks before but when we arrived there were plenty of sites available due to cancellations. These were prime river-side sites. we asked to camp in one of these but staff said no. Many of these sites remained empty for the 2 days we were there and other people were given the sites when they came and had no reservations. We were squeezed into a small site on the upper row (we only have a tiny 8 foot trailer) next to a monster RV that could only just get in the site on a slant. Their front door was 5 feet from our picnic table and fire pit. Their windows and front door were facing us a few feet away. We were outside all the time as our trailer is just a sleeper. It entirely blocked our view of seeing anything. We were told it would be confusing for staff to change us around (there are only 32 sites here) and place a available sticker on our site instead of the other nicer site. We will not be going there again.

Although the campground is a veritable oasis in the desert, this last visit has ruined it for us.
We arrived on September 16th...AFTER reservations are no longer accepted...and though the campground was full, we managed to find a site. It had a RESERVED ticket on the post, but we assumed that this was just an oversight. After setting up, we were approached by a new arrival who claimed that we had "taken her site". When I explained that reservations aren't accepted after the 7th, she explained that "the Parks-lady was holding it for us"....a direct conflict-of-interest by the Operator(s).
Shortly afterwards, the "Parks-lady" arrived and subjected us to all sorts of hostility for "disrespecting" her signage. She even went as far as to claim that the site was "closed due to Covid"....even though the other camper had already told us that it was being "held" for them...along with one other site in the campground, for other friends.
Our neighbours informed us that the site had been occupied the day before, and when we left the following day, the "friends" moved in...so much for the Covid closure.
We've been coming here for YEARS and never had any issues with any of the other Operators...in fact, we still run into some of them while camping in other parts of the Province. This was an awful experience.

The night before we were to leave I realized that I had done the unthinkable - booked a campground with no flush toilets. All the way there I was doing mental arithmetic to figure out where else to stay, or how on earth I was going to deal with pit toilets! Thanks to barely any coverage on the route, I was prevented from acting. We checked in to #23. At first look it was not good as it borders 3 other sites. However, by the end of the trip I loved that site as it was actually nicely shaded and felt relatively private (plus we're friendly types!).The site had power, and backed onto a nice greenbelt. Although we were in a tent, we didn't choose a tenting site when booking. It was great to have the luxury of charging our stuff. The two ladies who operate the park are incredible. They work so hard! It was just crazy hot and they did such a nice job of cleaning the campsites when people checked out, it was above and beyond the basics. I always clean the picnic table when we arrive, with my paper towels and bleach spray & there was NOTHING on my cloth when I did it. Now...onto the pit toilets. I can safely say that I have never ever been in one of those in which there wasn't a disgusting pissy toilet seat, a stink from hell, and no tp. These things....were luxury. They were regularly cleaned, and had ZERO SMELL. I have no clue how they managed this. There was no grose seat and a full supply of tp. There's also a soap thing outside asking you to wash before & after using. Very very nice surprise. In fact,, rather than fleeing the next morning, we stayed our 2 nights plus added one more. There was no cell service in our site but there is a little picnic table (and min library, adorable) where people can sit and use their phones. I guess some sites can get a signal but ours couldn't. We lucked out and saw the comet while we were there, and the stars and planets are amazing. We spent our days at the little swimming hole, which was nice and refreshing. Our kids (11,13) floated on tubes and a dinghy in the area, had fun for 3 days. Ashcroft is best for shopping but Cache Creek is also near. Firewood was reasonable (maybe $7?), and they sell ice at the campground ($4). We love trains, and didn't mind them at all. Didn't see any mosquitoes, maybe it's too hot? It seems like Goldpan provincial, in that it's a stop-over but that being said, we talked to a number of repeat visitors for whom this is one of their favourite places & they return every year as a destinatiion and not a stop over. Saw several boats going out, there's a launch there. Oh - there are apparently horrible snakes around - bull snakes and...rattlesnakes. The ladies who operate the place know all about them and can put you at ease ( we didn't see any, but we didn't go into the brush surrounding as that would've been...asking for trouble). One of the ladies told us that she had seen a snake a few yrs back & grabbed it and threw it in the brush. Hopefully she sticks around! But, we didn't see any & I felt comfortable that we could relax. We'll be going back next year for sure.

We visited the day use park and it was nice. We sat along the rivers edge and enjoyed the scenery. Water was high and most of the beach was flooded. Enjoyed watching the trains on both sides of the river. The rock formations on the other side of the river is interesting.

We camped here with a group for 2 nights. The host was wonderful and very accommodating! Only down side is the trains which are frequent through the night and woke us up as we tented. No beach because river was very high and also a note to watch out for cactus! Park was very well maintained and clean.

Nice campground on Thompson river. Trains on both sides of campground are relentless. Beware waiking your dog off trail as cactus are everywhere. Nice hosts.
