My husband and I had never been to Mayberry, we wasn't sure what to expect and if their would be alot to do there and we were surprised to learn they have SO much to do! We spent a whole day on main street enjoying the little shops where you can find almost anything and it's honestly VERY AFFORDABLE! we ate at Barney's Cafe and it was exactly what we wanted, you know those diners we all ate at as kids that served the best ice cream in the world and had the absolute best hamburgers? Well this was Barney's! We then went and toured mayberry "all the things to do with Andy Griffith" and had alot of fun! This town has some of the most beautiful murals painted on downtown buildings which was really cool, such an artsy vibe! The little stores had bluegrass music playing outside and had alot of benches to sit and rest while you listen! Opies candy store has tons of candy you buy by the pound it's just like the old fashioned candy stores! We took a haunted Ghost tour led by "Mark" which was also a history tour of some of the old buildings in Mayberry and we had alot of fun! We had breakfast at the rusted rooster and that was my absolute FAVORITE place to eat breakfast it was Sooooo good! My husband and I both felt at home in mayberry and we never met one single rude person, people that lived there stopped and talked to us on the street and welcomed us to town with smiling faces! We will definitely be back and if you are thinking about going JUST DO IT! You'll love it :)

If you love Mayberry and the Andy Griffith Show, you will love Mt Airy. It is a wonderful day trip. There are shops, diners, candy stores, museums, murals, and more. It is a neat, well kept community that merits a stop. We all enjoyed our visit, even though it was a very hot day. We ate at Snappy Diner.

We were part of a group tour and a local guide joined our tour bus to give us a rundown of 'Mayberry.' Towns like Mount Airy, in my mind, is what makes America the Country we are. This is a must visit if you enjoyed the Andy Griffith show. Bear in mind, the original show was filmed in Hollywood not 'Mayberry'! Points of interest are scattered around town.

This is a town that is trying to mimic the iconic 1960’s show. It has the charm and the local stores are mostly geared for tourists. We had lunch and walked the main drag. The so called antique shops are a way to kill some time and worthwhile. If your a boomer like me it’s worth it. Enjoy

We drove through Mt. Airy on a Sunday morning on our way to South Carolina just to have a peek at the famous places. We did not expect anything to be open, but thought that it would be possible to identify some places and take pictures from the car. As we had not done our homework, just had read brochures, we were not able to identify any of the buildings. There was a replica police car giving rides but that was all we were able to see. Definitely a place to spend time walking the streets, knowing where to locate attractions that are advertised, and their hours of operation. Our suggestion is to do your homework.

Judy, Judy, Judy lol. We were so glad to be there during the Mayberry Festival. A small town and so “down to Earth”. You’ll see many original places from the Andy Griffith Show. Take a ride in an original patrol car. Ask for Mike. He’s the best.

This is a charming little downtown area!! Plenty of free parking is available and it is easily walkable in a couple of hours. Great shops and some quaint eateries are directly on Main Street. Highly recommend for a nice day trip if in this area.

Everywhere we went the townsfolk were friendly, smiling and pleasant. Enjoyed the Andy Griffith sites but they should be open later that 4:30 p.m. so that tourists have time to enjoy it. The food at Barney's Cafe was fantastic and the visitor's center staff and shop owners were friendly and helpful. It's a beautiful and quaint town. I would definitely recommend.

This was our second visit to Mt Airy and it was just as we remembered it. It has to be the friendliest town I have ever visited! We like antiquing, so we had an enjoyable time just browsing, buying vintage jewelry and a large set of vintage dishes and talking to merchants. We ate at the Mayberry Cafe, where we tried the huge platter of poutine. Oh my goodness! Delicious! We will be going back to the town where everyone is your cousin!

Are the roads leading into Mayberry, 2 or 4 lane. Traveling west from Greensboro. I am terrified to drive on mountain roads.

It’s a combination of the two. The only steep stretch is 4 lane heading towards Mt. Airy from the north. I’ve driven it a couple of times but couldn’t sketch it out for you. My wife is also terrified of heights and that stretch does make her a bit nervous.

Chances are that there will be plenty of restaurants open throughout the day. You may want to arrive to town relatively early to hit some shops though. Some will close early for the holiday.

Is there RV parking downtown close to the attractions?

Downtown proper has only parallel parking and so RV's are too big. There are public lots off of the main street but none that I know of are for RV's.
The Veteran's Park not only has ample parking, it also has set-ups for camping with water, electricity, bath-house & facilities. It is within walking distance.

If by highlights, you mean Mayberry, 1 day might be adequate. Truthfully I cannot be sure because most of the Mayberry attractions were closed so we visited several stores. Definitely tourist town--relying on Mayberry fans to support the town.
