We took a ride to the Finger Lakes and thought we would just see some nice scenery and relax.
I knew there were a few wineries up there but I wasn’t very hopeful about the wine after having wine in Dutchess County and Long Island.
We were shocked that there are about 70 wineries there some of which have really nice facilities.
The wine was actually better than expected. It’s not full bodied. If you want or need that you have to go to California but they make some nice reasonably priced drinkable wines.

Thank you for visiting! The scenery is definitely a great reason to visit, but we're delighted to hear the wineries exceeded your expectations. Cheers!

I just want to quickly note that I don't think the area is very gay friendly. There were a couple experiences we had where my fiance (male) and I (male) were treated coldly or rudely for no apparent reason. In just one example, we stopped at an antique shop and the owner looked over then went on with what he was doing. Not 5 minutes later a straight couple walked in and he pleasantly greeted them. Unless someone actually says something homophobic, you can never know for sure, but in the absence of any other reasoning I could think of and the pattern that developed, we were pretty certain the area was not the most tolerant. I will say that the younger people were much nicer to us, so maybe the areas is changing with a new generation. But I think other couples should know what they might expect from an industry that is often otherwise known to be welcoming.
I highly recommend the whites over the reds. I had seen something that said something of that nature before I left, and the very first tasting we did confirmed that for me. Of the three wineries we visited, I recommend Deep Root and Heron Hill, and for different reasons. Deep Root was such a personal and intimate experience where the owner told us all about his journey to opening the place and we really got a feel for the industry on a human level. Heron hill has an outstanding view and the best local wines we had.
I would avoid Bully Hill if the highly commercialized experience is off-putting for you.

Hi there - -thank you and your fiancé so much for visiting the Finger Lakes and Keuka Lake. We truly this doesn't deter you from coming back to see us again as there is so much to do here.
We feel disappointed that you had some experiences where you didn't feel welcomed. Our area and especially the wineries, are known to be one of the most welcoming, home-town feel experiences you can get in the Northeast. Though we cannot make excuses for the businesses that did not provide a warm welcome to you, we couldn't say enough how great our member wineries are. They all have wonderful reviews and customer service with a focus on education and entertainment as a focus.
We're super glad to hear about your positive experience at Heron Hill, a Keuka Lake Wine trail member, as well as Deep Root, who are also very fine folks who are exactly what you described.

The Keuka Lake Wine Trail and its passport is an excellent way to taste your way around this beautiful lake. Excellent bargains await as you visit. Save room in the car as you will likely pick up a bottle or two or dozen, along the way.

Keuka Lake is the most scenic of the no Finger Lakes. With a cold front and new snow it's prettier than ever. We came to Hammondsport to eat, but the wineries beckoned first. There are numerous wineries with different wines. Keuka Lake Winery is rustic, but a delightful visit. Dr. Frank's should not be skipped. Domaine Leseure is French through and through while Weiss is German. McGreggors should be visited every time. The others are also good with varying choices. Despite the chill, this is a great place in the heart of Winter.

So many wineries, so little time! Highly recommend a stay at the Park Inn, visit to Curtiss Museum, and the Point of the Bluff Winery. Be sure to catch a ride with Finger Lake Seaplanes!

This area of the Finger Lakes of New York is quite beautiful - thanks to a late fall foliage season, our late October visit was made all the more spectacular. We visited several wineries in the area. Without exception, we were warmly greeted everywhere we went. The quality of the wines of course is very much a personal matter, but we find a couple of bottles that we really enjoyed.

It's beautiful country here, better when the leaves are changing. The are wineries everywhere and it's impossible to visit them all in 1 tour and to remember it. They all very from not so great to very nice. I think everyone we met were very nice and really work to give there customers a great experience. I'm from Michigan and I use my experiences in Traverse City as my basis for winery and vineyard experiences. There were some very good wines and a few bad. My wife and I gravitate to dry reds usually. Most of the winery staff told us this area doesn't usually offer the best reds due to climate, which to me seemed odd since they a little farther south than Traverse City, MI and aren't on big water and they make excellent reds up there. But they were right. We managed to find several good dry reds still. If you like whites and sweet kool aid wines, there are plenty there. The drive through the country side is beautiful.

I've done all the upstate wine trails, this is the easiest to tackle in one day. Penn Yan is a cute town, gorgeous lake. Waterfalls all around, Curtiss & Corning museums...make it a long weekend. Incredibly inexpensive compared to the wine country in California, prettier scenery, better wine and much less crowded.
Just do your research, know which wineries specialize in dry or sweet, red or white.
Going on our second Keuka trail trip in two years tomorrow, going to try the passport.

The Keuka Wine trail is one of the prettiest drives - and the wineries and breweries are fantastic. Steuben Brewery is one of my favorites - but there are over a dozen wineries on the trail - as well as a couple of distilleries and breweries. Steuben has great music - and is one of the best stops on the trail.

Beautiful lake drive and lots of vineyards and wineries to see... not lots of town to visit, though. More of a scenic drive than a place with lots of stops.

First time to the area for the Garlic Festival in August. I have had a number of people tell me about a wine tour that is conducted via boat to the wineries along the water. Is there such a tour? I can't seem to find any.

When we went on Keuka Wine Trail we went to first winery and bought coupon book for free sampling of wines at 7 wineries. We did this over two days and did 4 first day and 3 the next day. We just drank the wine samples and nothing more except to buy bottles to take home. We had lunch on both days between the wineries to absorb the wine samples. We drove ourselves but if you want to drink more then it would be best to use the suggestion above to hire Main Street Drivers and all of you can split the bill. Some hotels have special deals with transportation company to shuttle you to the wineries. We stayed at Best Western in Penn Yan.

We will be in the finger lakes region in September. We are not sure where to stay. We want to be near the vineyards and walking distance to town. If you could recommend hotels, motels or inns and favorite restaurants and vineyards.
Thanks

There are several brand new chain motels in the area- Best Western Hammondsport Hotel at the south end of the lake, and Microtel and Hampton Inn in Penn Yan, in addition to an older, but not old, Best Western, at the north end. Check Trip Advisor also for B&B's and vacation rentals (which usually require a week stay minimum during the peak summer season, but often only two days in spring or fall). Look under Hammondsport, Penn Yan, or Branchport.
