Learn about the history of Syracuse and Onondaga county
set de 2021 • Família
As a real estate agent in CNY I love being able to provide my buyers relocating to the area with a list of fun things to do. The salt museum in Liverpool provides alot of insight into the history of Syracuse and Onondaga county. Located near Onondaga lake it is one of the best places to take kids to learn about how the area came to be. Staff is always friendly and informative. Procopip real estate highly reccomends a visit.

es pequeño el recorrido , pero aun asi , se puede apreciar y comprender lo dificil y arduo que era el trabajo en las salinas desde 1786 hasta1870 ...

Unique and Even Fascinating

What a treat - and free!!! Learned a great deal about the significance of salt in the region and the importance of salt in our history. They play a video providing lots of information about salt but also about willow basket making!! Who knew?! The visit was well worth our time. You do have be careful and check on the times they are open - they open in mid to late May and close in early October. During part of that season they are only open on Saturday and Sunday.

Salt museum

Small museum that is somewhat outdated. It has some information about salt making and a small area of the actual equipment used. Exhibits are hard to follow and random. Has a video playing in a loop that isn’t anything about the salt museum it was about baskets. Don’t think kids would enjoy this much since there’s nothing for them to do except walk around and read. Interesting history about Syracuse and salt but it’s a lot more fun outside by the lake. Beautiful park and walking area.

Old style, underfunded exhibit

Museums dated, not real explanatory, videos seem a bit random. Price is right = free. Interesting to know, worth 15 minutes

The history in the area that is outside of Syracuse is indeed fascinating. Who knew that to 'make' salt was so detailed?

Educational stop

First of it’s free and small. So it’s worth to stop by and learn something new. Who would have thought that upstate New York used to produce salt?

Closed? Very Disappointed - Sad

This museum does not seem to be in operation any longer. We went out of our way to check it out - sounded like an interesting aspect of local history, but locked tight, no hours posted, display cases inside are empty. The website gave confusing, clearly out-dated information. Called the telephone number on the website and left a message - no return call.

I remember visiting the original salt museum and loved it then. I brought family visiting from out of town to the salt museum as it is today, and it was great to see the appreciation of our local history through their eyes. Nice job with the museum.

We stopped by one afternoon while at Onondaga Lake Park. I will come back! I’m a history lover so this was right up my alley, but I must say the kids were entertained too. I plan to come back on a solo adventure one day to really soak in all the knowledge. Take the kids to the playground first to let them blow off some steam first and they will probably be like my kids, more receptive.
