Very interesting historical home in Jamaica, NY
abr de 2019 • Casais
My wife and I visited the King Manor Museum in April 2018. It was the summer home of Rufus King, one of the signers of the US Constitution. He also served as the US Ambassador to Great Britain and as a US senator on the early 1800s. We were given a very informative tour by a volunteer tour guide who was very well informed on the King family, the history of the home, and the history of the surrounding area of Queens. The home was in the King family until the late 1800s when it was acquired by New York City. It is wonderful that the city had the foresight to acquire the house and the surrounding park, thereby preserving it for future generations to enjoy.

an excellent afternoon for the curious and history lovers

Rather surprised at this museum. It is a great house with a lot of history. Was given a very long tour of the exterior and interior. Both people giving tours were extremely knowledgeable and personable. I felt very welcome, they treated us like we were real guests at their home. A great way to spend the afternoon. Go to neighboring area for good cheap food and lots of choices.

Currently it's being renovated and a few of the rooms are looking a mess. Understandable. When it's done it will be great. Would recommend any native New Yorker to take an afternoon here. We got there on a Sunday sometime between 1:30 and 2 and we were done at almost 4.

Suggested donation only $5, well worth much more than that. Honestly have paid much more for not as good experience and treatment at other historic houses.

A trip back in history

Went there. On Sunday 4-15-18. Approx.at 1pm. I was Surprised that I was the only visitor at the time . But it worked to my benefit. I was met by Brittany who introduced herself as the director of education of the museum. She proceeded to give me a 60 minute private tour of the manor. It was delightful. She was very knowledgeable and personable. I was shown the first and second floor. Seen was the guest salon on the first floor, the kitchen and Rufus kings study and library room. Upstairs I was shown the family salon /bedroom. Only thing missing was a colonial lunch thrown in , lol. What a diamond in the rough !!. Local school kids and local residents are missing out. If they don’t go to visit it..yes it is in Jamaica and not in midtown Manhattan, but it is well-worth the time to get there . Plus,I was not asked to pay any fee for the tour. Again ,I was the only visitor-at the time ,sooo I think she cut me a break, lol. She certainly was as knowledgeable as any big time museum curator in midtown MANHATTAN.

Historic gem in Jamaica!

What a wonderful surprise to take a step back in time, and learn about the history of the King Manor Museum. The outside of the home is huge and inviting. The day that I visited was beautiful. Trees and flowers welcomed me into the park, and when I arrived at the front porch, I was greeted at the giant front door by two young ladies that guided me throughout the house. They were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all of the stories they shared. The homes interior was fascinating! The beautiful woodwork details, the layout of the rooms and quirky history made for an enjoyable visit. The kitchen was my favorite part because of the stove. It would have been amazing to have a stove like that when the house was occupied. It was fun to imagine all of the types of meals that would have been prepared there and all of the dinner parties that would have been hosted. Lovely visit.

A nice place to visit near JFK airport
fev de 2017 • A sós
This historical house and small park is a nice place to spend 1 or 2 hours before taking your flight at JFK airport.
You just knock the door and they will let you in for a guided tour inside the house. They ask for a $5 donation, which is ok.
The house was built in 1750 and there are few decorations remaining, so there is really very few things to see. Still, worth the visit.
In a sunny day, you can enjoy a nice walk around the garden. The house and adjacent garden is one block from the Jamaica station.

Way More than Expected!!

This was a place listed in AAA guidebook which seemed a long ways to get to by subway. However we were nicely surprised with this great City of NY historical site. The guide was a high school student who was so knowledgeable and nice that it was refreshing! He led us through several rooms with period antiques and reproduction pieces. There are also display rooms with various information on life in.Queens in the 1700's. The home is in good shape and the "keeper" of the home and apparent mentor of our highschool guide also offered very.intereating information about Mr. King being a signer of the Constitution and avid Abolitionist. He and his family worked tirelessly to make slavery outlawed in NYS. This is worth seeing if you want to know more about the history and culture of Queens and more importantly NYC!

Let this Museum surprise you!

Walking around Jamaica I was intrigued by a very nice and quiet garden, with a house in the middle. I approached the (closed) entrance and somewhat disappointed was about to leave..then the door was opened by nice lady (later I discovered her to be the Museum's director) who gave me a tour of the place- former house of Rufus King, a politician and historian, turned into a small Museum which affords a glimpse of 19th century life. Some of the rooms have been kept almost unchanged and there is an Alice in Wonderland feeling -stepping into another time and another word - mixed with the interest raised by the very detailed explanations. I would recommend this visit to anyone who likes exploring a wonderful city also off the beaten tracks, and enjoy some refreshing and relaxing time during a busy day in Jamaica.
