I've been to numerous firefighter museums all over north America and they were all good, but this one is AWESOME! It's huge!

Lots of things to learn, explore, and do, great for kids, but: the kid was merely a 1/4 inch too tall for their kid challenge. Very disappointing that they wouldn’t let him do it, definitely diminished the fun for the kid. A bit more sensitivity in such a case would come a long way.

My experience at this museum is almost laughable. I have 3 children (5,4,1.5) and thought this would be a perfect cloudy day activity. Jokes. As soon as we enter I am told that diaper bags are not allowed. "What if I need to change my child?" The answer "go outside to change him!?" Also, no water bottles allowed, no exceptions. We enter at $25 a pop and are shown a video about all the things our kids can't do, like be too loud. My favorite line from the video is the museum is a family museum not a children's museum.
The trucks are cool and they have hands on displays (but obviously with covers so the kids can't touch them too easily). The obstacle course on the upper level has crazy height limits only up to 48" and my 5 year old girl is 46" tall. It would have been awful if only one of my children got to do the course. Oh wait, my toddler is NOT EVEN ALLOWED OUT OF HIS STROLLER. I can mention now that all the bathrooms have changing stations but I was required to change my child outside and the water fountains have water bottle refill stations. The rules and unaccommodating nature of this place was astonishing. If your kids are out of diapers but not taller than 48" this place is super cool. The staff (except the front desk lady) was lovely and sweet. I even let my toddler out of his stroller so he could climb on the firetruck (rebel 😝) and the kid didn't say anything.
Bottom line, it seems like this place is run by some 80 year old Irish male firefighter who was made to have kid activities in the museum probably for sponsorship reasons but is doing everything in his power to make it inhospitable for children. But it is cute.

Hello:
I just wanted to say I am so sorry that you found your visit less than friendly and just explain our policies a bit more, in hopes you will understand why they are in place.
We do not allow large bags in the Museum because when we asked local law enforcement to limit our exposure to potential active shooter or other attack (you may remember that firefighters and museums were a target) we were advised that not allowing large bags in would be the best policy to deter this and keep our visitors and team safe. So, we acted on this advice for the sake of safety. Our policy is to offer a small bag for parents to bring essentials in for their little ones and I see when reviewing the film from that day, you were offered a small bag for diapers or other essentials.
I am not sure how the Museum costs $25 a pop: unless you meant for your entire family, as that is not what we change per visitor, so if you were mischarged, I would be happy to investigate that for you.
Our junior firefighter activity had to be engineered for a certain height: it is impossible for us to offer a one size fits all experience, but this is for safety and liability reasons. I am sorry you found this unusual, but it is typical of interactive museums: they usually have at least one area designated for tots or restricted for tots. This is true even of the largest children's museum in the U.S. We do not allow food or drink of any kind in the Museum to protect the collection from pests and damage, but do have a fountain with cups for water while you are at the Museum: I am sorry you did not see the cups next to the fountain.
Finally we state very clearly we are NOT a children's museum so parents will not have the expectation that everything can be touched: we try to be transparent on the museum website and when you check in. I am sorry you found your experience here problematic, but assure that the policies in place are for everyone' s safety and the safety of the Museum collection.

We like to stop at fire museums. My husband brought a patch from our department to donate. Lots of old and very cool trucks. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Very child friendly.

We’ve never seen such an exhibit of Fire Fighting Equipment. The history of Fire fighting in The state is portray nicely. Every volunteer and paid firefighter should visit this. I’m an American LaFrance fan and my wife is a FASNY member. We learned so much and if you have kids, there is a great section for them. Come visit.

Although I’ve lived in the area for decades, this was my first visit to the fasny museum. What a pleasant surprise! This museum was so interesting, with lots of fire trucks and equipment. I learned so much more than I thought I would so I highly recommend this for adults. Also Great place to take kids on a rainy day since there are plenty of hands on things to do.

This museum houses a LOT of trucks-many really old ones-I would say their collection rivals the NYC Fire Museum in that respect! Staff was lovely and helpful. Not crowded when we went on a summer Saturday afternoon. Many interactive exhibits for kids which were fun
Appropriately sized gift shop that was well stocked. Only recommendation from my son was he wished there were "more trucks to climb in" but it was a 10 out of 10 for this Mom!

We used a museum pass to visit for free, but this museum is well worth the admission price. I've brought my daughter several times since she was a preschooler, but this was the first visit for my husband. I was pleased to see new exhibits since our last visit, and more changes underway. Everything is spotless and well signed.
They are quite rigid. My daughter removed her few items (wallet, hairbrush, etc) from her drawstring bag and put them in my purse. She was still required to put the empty drawstring bag in the car, rather then on the coat rack or inside my purse. The children's play area also seemed rigid in the age/size requirements. A family with several small children could have an issue with some being allowed in to play while others are not.
There is also a fun bucket brigade activity, and a room with hands on activities, coloring, and crafts. While this is not a children's museum, children can have fun (quietly) while adults enjoy the history.
We've gone in the past for the Dalmation Day, which was fun but crowded. We enjoyed our last visit more, there were only a handful of other visitors and we were able to take our time and read all the signage.

We took our nephew and his mother, the nephew was ten at the time and loved the place, we all loved the historical perspective. There are some very old fire trucks in the museum, it's quite a collection. The interactive exhibitions are definitely just for kids
