One year ago, almost to the day, my wife and I visited Waters Crest's beautiful, modern tasting room and had a wonderful time. The other day, we enjoyed our second visit even more. Both nights we had dinner reservations at Touch of Venice across Main Road. Despite an award winning wine list, TOV allows diners to BYO any wines from Waters Crest. Since we love both these wines and TOV, that works for us!
On this midweek evening we walked in and had the gorgeously appointed tasting room to ourselves, except of course, for Lauren at the tasting bar. She is the charming and knowledgeable daughter of owners Jim and Linda Waters, Waters Crest's proprietors. It easy to see why such a young lady possesses such wine expertise: her father Jim is the accomplished and talented winemaker who crafts these lovely wines from the North Fork's best vineyards.
And she did lead us on an excellent tasting, starting with whites and progressing to reds. Lauren explained all the relevant winemaking details about each and allowed us to taste and evaluate. That's how to conduct a tasting!
Because of the popularity and small production of some wines, they were sold out. But no worries because we tasted some beauties. These included a distinctive dry Riesling made in an Alsatian style, and a just released 2016 Chardonnay Private Reserve. Crisp and flinty, this wine shows excellent character and will be lovely after several months more in bottle.
But the reds! Extraordinary, every one we tasted. Lauren poured for us the full lineup of 2014 Grand Vin reds. That is Mr. Waters designation for a reserve style wines made only in exceptional vintages. 2014 meets that criterion, as the Cabernet Sauvignon GV, Merlot GV, and Cabernet Franc GV were magnificent wines. Certainly young and cellar worthy but supple and fruit forward right now. We also tasted a 2014 Petit Verdot that was pitch black in the glass but showed rare elegance for this varietal. In Bordeaux, France it's mostly used in blending to add color. Our next 2014 red was their blend called simply CR, or Campania Rosso. Campania is a wine region in southwest Italy, home of Naples. This wine, like the others, was outstanding!
Around then, Jim Waters himself walked in, and he showed the same gregarious enthusiasm and friendliness as his daughter Lauren. What a pleasure for my wife and me to hang out and taste with both of them.
As we knew from many visits to and extensive tastings on the North Fork, other recent outstanding vintages include 2010 and 2013. Mr. Waters, seeing our love and passion for his wines, offered us tastes of some his older Grand Vin wines that had not YET sold out. These included Cabernet Francs and Merlots, and perhaps a Cabernet Sauvignon. Well these wines were even further developed with some bottle age, and we purchased an incredible mixed case that we will enjoy together with friends. But several, like these structured 2014 we'll cellar further.
Like any superbly made, artisanal product, Waters Crest's Grand Vin reds are not inexpensive. But they are equal to, and in some cases superior to, great reds from Italy, France, and California, all of which I have bought and cellared for years. As a native LI'er, I'm proud of the world class wines being made by Waters Crest's Jim Waters and a handful of other producers on NoFo.
Thanks again, Jim and Lauren, for a great tasting room experience.

We came here to celebrate my sister's big 50. We were treated to several tasty selections (which we happily purchased when we were done.). Very knowledgeable and friendly staff! Love the decor and cozy interior. Can't wait to return in the summer!

The tasting room is relatively new and decorated in a warm and welcoming style. Wooden barrels are set up as tables and comfy leather chairs are plentiful. There is a long bar area and also a large outside seating area with fire pit. Live music is played on certain nights either inside or outside depending on the weather. The wines are stellar and the ratings support our personal reviews. My favorite is their cab sav, but all of their wines are very pleasing and enjoyable. In addition to their wonderful wines , live music and special tasting events, the staff is very competent and personable as are the owners. As an added perk a limited menu from an excellent local restaurant is available and the food is delivered directly to the winery tasting room so that it can be enjoyed with Waters Crest wines. Certainly well worth a visit.

Great wines and atmosphere. I love the outdoor bar and fire pits! They've got music on inside and out. I always look forward to Wednesday night music over the summer.

Hidden gem that you really have to look for. The wines here are outstanding. The Cab Franc is out of this world! Not your typical menu offerings for a winery, but instead has a small menu from the Italian joint down the street. The fire pits on the patio add to the relaxing ambiance on cooler nights. Definitely worth a stop!

Another couple went with us to Waters Crest Winery on Main Road in Cutchogue about 1 1/2 month ago. We had a very good Reisling wine and a cheese and cracker platter. I believe there was sopressta on it too, but I really can not remember if that was there or another winery we visited around the same time. We sat inside at first and then moved outside to sit around an open fireplace, It was very comfortable and we had a wonderful time. We stayed and just sat and talked and drank their wine for about 1 1/2 hour. That was plenty of time for two bottles of wine and nosh's.

There are two vineyard in one tasting room here at Waters Crest. We tried the Waters Crest Chardonnay which had a lovely nose, a hint of oak and delicate almond notes but it was the neighbor in the tasting room: Porcelina Wines that was the star of our show. Porcelina's Oceans 2012 Chardonnay delighted these oak lovers. Enticing aromas of melon and peach erupt from the glass, while the use of French Oak brings a slight toastiness to the flavor of honey and apricot.
The tasting room is cozy and comfortable. An outdoor patio provides ample room for those who prefer fresh air and/ or picnic.
