We were 2 couples July 24th evening cruise. Very safe, spotless vessel. Staff was wonderful, they educate you on the way out and make sure you see whales. We saw a female and her calf. They breached, tail showing, splashing, pectoral fins. They really put on a show. Beautiful mammals. Trip is 3 to 3 1/2 hrs. Snacks and beverages available for purchase. Water can be choppy making it a little rough of a ride at times. A few people were suffering with motion sickness. Dramamine might be a good idea if you tend to feel sick in cars and boats. I highly recommend the evening cruise because you can also see a beautiful sunset. We left out of Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn NY.

Took the whale watching cruise on Wednesday. We had booked from the uk and a problem with our email meant the tickets didn't get through but princess cruises were great and it was all sorted via Facebook. The boat is fairly large, well maintained and super clean with toilets and a bar. The crew were professional at all times and we were given a safety briefing. We were accompanied by a environmental whale watcher who was so knowledgable and talked to us in depth about the whales, their habits and environment. Crew members keep a constant watch for the whales at all times so you have the best chance of spotting them. We saw whales, 2 flukes, Dolphins, cow nosed Ray's and jumping sturgeon. It was one of the most memorable days of our trip. Yes, it's about an hour out of town, we took a cab and combined it with a look around Coney Island, it is so worth the money and as much a must do on a visit to New York as the Empire State. Enjoy.

We took my whole family (15 people) and had a wonderful time! We did have great weather which of course helped. We were prepared for not seeing anything because we didn’t see anything as we were going out but as we were getting ready to head back, we saw 75 dolphins and a whale! As we passed by the shore next to the beaches there were even more dolphins!

The crew was very nice and explained lots. The boat was comfortable but we all stayed on the top deck because the weather was perfect.

Side note: I used Groupon and got discounts but when I looked at my credit card report, I was double charged. I called the cruise line and a wonderful woman named, Mary, straighten everything out! Great customer service!! Groupon does not use the phone, you have to Live Chat and email. I really wanted to talk this out but they tried. Mary was better!

Well, I finally got to see some whales! On the American Princess, you need to be patient, as you can be watching the water for hours. Still its one of the best things to do near NYC. Going by subway from Manhattan takes a long time on the A train, and the 2 and 5 train from Flatbush Avenue is much faster. When you get to the nearest subway stop beach 116 street there is absolute confusion as the taxi drivers don't appear to know where the cruise starts from or anything about Fort Toten/Breezy Point. So come prepared and make sure you have plenty of time on hand. American Princess needs to advertise themselves more and apparently were not aware about TripAdvisor, or even some of the other well known reviewing sites.

If you are in NYC, whale watching is really a worthwhile experience, and definitely not a tourist trap

New York City has added a new ferry service from Pier 11 East River to 108th St. Rockaway. And we had to try it. Website is screwed up, terrible in fact with wrong schedules and information. Suffice it to say that weekdays the ferries leave Pier 11 at quarter past the hour and the cost is only $2.75 for the one hour trip....cross river and go in the channel between Governor's Island and Brooklyn going in at Sunset Park (the former Brooklyn Army Terminal) before heading down Bay toward the Atlantic Ocean under the Verrazano Bridge with Staten Island to your right (starboard) side into Lower New York Bay as starboard view is to Raritan Bay and NJ's Sandy Hook and Atlantic Highlands; portside you view Norton Point, Seagate, and Coney Island as the boat enters Rockaway Inlet to Jamaica Bay (Breezy Point is now starboard). Some different views of Manhattan can be seen over the Brooklyn landscape, famed Floyd Bennett Field and Gateway National Recreation spread before you portside and the Rockaway Peninsula is starboard as you head into the floating pier at 108th St. Rockaway. We had planned to walk two blocks to the A train subway ride back to Manhattan but enjoyed the boat ride so much, we anted up another $2.75 to float back to Pier 11. Yeah, the Staten Island Ferry is a great must ride and bargain; and Hornbolower and Circle Lines will take you on rides all around the Harbor for more money. But for the money, the sights, the fun, $5.50 for two hours is now a must ride for tourists and natives alike...new views, new sights, new fun.

We decided to try the whale watching experience located in Breezy point in Riis Park. Parking was free. It is a 4 hour boat excursion. We went from 12pm to 4pm.

The boat is mostly comfortable it has 2 levels. The lower level has comfortable booths and tables. They have a little snack bar and sell chips, hotdogs, soda and alcohol.

The 2nd level has some picnic tables and some seating.

There was a naturalist on board that gives a very interesting and educational talk about whales.

They tell you there is no guarantee that we will see whales. We saw 3 whales but it took some time to find them. Meanwhile the boat trip was nice. The captain walked around a little and said hello to some people.

I didn't get seasick but i noticed some people definitely looked green. The staff is very understanding about that and try to give you some tips to prevent it and some bags if you get sick.

Overall it was a nice day out we saw some nice views of Manhattan and caught a glimpse of a few whales.
