The road to the top is one of the most scenic in the area. The road is a little rough in spots but we saw all types of cars and trucks that were able to navigate it. We could see a gate across the area at the top so we parked in a large parking area on the right. There were some campers in tents there. Great views. The area is flat and easy to walk around,

Poor rating is not due to the Lookout but due to road being closed about 1 mile from the Lookout. No warning until you get to the lock gate. If you can there, it’s a great place! Dated June 04, 2020

I drove all the way to the top sometime around November 1, 2019. The views are FANTASTIC! And, of course, you can't beat the price: free. Thought I'd go back today, Feb 29, 2020, but the last bit of the road to the top is closed. Even though I didn't make it to the absolute top, it's still a great drive and the views are still fantastic. Back in November of 2019, the restrooms at the top were closed for the season, but the restrooms at the campground/picnic area a little lower on the mountain were open. I didn't check the restroom availability today. There was a little snow at places on the side of the road; overall the road was in reasonably good condition (if you keep your speed to 25 or less), and it was no problem for my 4x4 pickup in 2-wheel-drive mode. My truck did get splattered with mud from melting snow, so a car wash is in order. As usual, there were lots of deer sightings. Didn't see any horses or elk up there today. (I did see elk in Ruidoso a few days ago, and then again, yesterday, in Alto.)

Saw this online and thought why not...best decision we made. The entire drive is beautiful and the view from the lookout is breathtaking. Our young kids even thought it was cool. Took lots of pictures and made lots of memories. Well worth it!

Pictures don’t do justice to the beautiful view. It is a bit of a climb but I am over 40 and not in the best of shape, no problem! Not seeing the wild horses was a bit of a disappointment but still worth the climb.

You car will get dirty. Your car can be washed as the wonderful full service car wash on the right as you go back into Ruidoso. (No I don’t own the car wash).

This is a wonderful drive, take it easy and you will see wildlife and wild mustangs. Once you get to the parking lot it’s a 2 minute walk (not sandals) to the lookout. I am NOT a hiker and I am not in shape. I can do it and it’s worth every step.

Take a camera and something to feed the chipmunks.

The trails from Monjeau Lookout are some of the best for panoramic views. You might get lucky and spot the herd of wild horses in the area. Storms can come up quite fast so be prepared. The first part of the road once you turn off the Ski Run Road is paved but then it changes to gravel. The gravel is fine in dry weather but can be a challenge when raining.

We had a good hike to the top of this tower. Absolutely beautiful view from up there. We had a perfectly clear, sunny day and it was nice and cool up there in late June. I wished I had my sweater. Saw what we thought were chipmunks 🐿 along the way.

The 5 1/2 mile drive up to the lookout tower was a bit sketchy for sure - mostly gravel and very rough - we were in a pickup and the going was very slow - some pretty grungy looking homes along the way but once we arrived it was well worth it. Be advised you still have to climb up some steep stone steps to get to the tower but the views are amazing - quite a difference in temperatures up there too. We saw a herd of beautiful wild horses up close on the drive back down. This is a don't miss!

@ 9651' - this location offers the views! We had a bit of haze while we were there but amazing none the less. The road up has a few really rough places. On the drive up, we did see a wild turkey family (not sure what you call them!) there were 4 or 5 babies and 2 adults. The babies were maybe 6" tall. cute and a first!
When we got to the top, there were 4 or 5 other cars there so a fair number of people were up in the structure so we opted to just do some of the scenic overlooks and walks near the parking area. Tons of wildflowers in bloom. Great view. A few horny toads were spied and caught (& released). If you're good with rough, bumpy, sometimes steep roads for a great view and nice nature spot - this is it!
