I don’t think I will ever see a course like this again. The layout is so beautiful. It is very challenging but in wonderful condition. Unfortunately, the altitude prevented me from playing the entire 18 holes, but I continued as driver/caddie for my friend while they completed the round. Your jaw drops at each turn through the hills at yet another bright green fairway.
I have seen comments about the staff but the folks we encountered were very accommodating and pleasant. It was definitely worth the drive from Albuquerque and I’m happy to have had the experience.

I have played at this course a half dozen times in the last 3 years, and I always find it fun and challenging to play. Currently (fall 2023) the course is in great shape, and the greens were very fast when we played there last week. As it is a three-hour round trip drive from my home to get to this course, it is not somewhere that I play often, but I try to take friends there who come in from out of town.
My only complaint about the course is that the last they require a credit card to reserve a tee time,and if you made a reservation for four and only show up with three, they WILL charge you for the missing golfer.
I get that they are trying to keep people from making reservations and not showing at all. However, in our case, I made the reservation for four, and for perfectly reasonable reasons, one of my friends had to bail and not make the trip from Albuquerque. Three of us showed up and had a great time playing golf that day, but when I checked my credit card account several days later I saw that they had charged it a second time for the "missing golfer".
It would have been more understandable if the golf course would have been really crowded that morning and they would have been able to "sell" that slot, but as it was, there were very few people on the course that morning. In fact nobody teed off during the tee times directly ahead of us or behind us. The fact that there were three of us rather than four did not prevent them from selling anybody else a round of golf that morning.
I am not saying that the course management tried to hide this policy that they have, and when I complained about the charge after the fact their response was that I should have called them 24 hours ahead, and there would not have been a charge. In our case we did not know 24 hours ahead that one of our group would not show up. Since I made the reservation, my card got charged.
I don't know about the rest of you, but this is the first time that this kind of charge has ever been levied on me. I would say that next time I will know better, but for me there will not be a next time at this course. I would call this a loss for me as well Black Mesa.

We decided to drive out of our way to play Black Mesa because it was recently rated in the Top 100 golf courses by one of the main golf magazines. The course design is very good, however it needs some time to grow and mature. The addition of cart paths would also benefit the players. It does not appear the golf course has staffed for a Top 100 course, the people are all very nice and helpful.

About 30 miles north west of Santa Fe lies a marvelous golf course with adequate clubhouse and small cafe. Green fee's were $69. The spectacular course meanders the desert around many mesas, thru valleys, and elevated tee boxes. I thought I would lose many golf balls because very few of the holes play beside each other, however I lost none.

Nice golf course, if we had been able to play the whole round. Big storm came through after 6 holes. After an hour wait under shelter were able to play remaining 3 holes on back. At the turn, GM said we could not longer play given condition of cart paths and course. OK. We asked for a credit for the back nine but he said there is a no credit policy. We argued and he offered $10 credit each. He was rather rude and insulting. Would like to play again but won't.

Black Mesa is back! The course is tough, but has exceptional views and the conditions are great again! Laurie and all the employees are the best. Don’t miss this place!

I have been golfing my way across the country, selecting the courses by looking at the top ratings in each state according to Golf Digest. Of the many curses I have played, Black Mesa ranks right up there near the top. Spectacular hole design. Wild greens. A great value at only $80. Some people might complain that the carts lack GPS, or that the cart paths are not paved. A pox on them! The guy who takes your money in the pro shop was a bit of a grump, but the gal who handles the golf carts was a delight. Beware of frost delays. You are at 7,000 feet. The air is colder and thinner and the ball flies farther.

Great golf, great views, a spectacular course. We played Black Mesa for the first time last month and vowed to come back every summer.
This course is not easy, with greens that have lots of undulation. As we played, we discussed other courses we have played with more beauty. Of the 100 courses we have played, maybe several equal the landscape of Black Mesa.

Black Mesa is a fantastic layout set in a beautiful location. Black Mesa is a real treat and an incredible value. I would happily drive miles out of my way to play this unique and challenging course.
I had not played BM for several years, mainly due to the catastrophic water issue that caused the course to fall into disrepair. But that issue has been resolved and the course is in the best shape ever. Green, green, green.
I'm already planning my return before cold weather sets in.

I golfed here 3-4 years ago and it may have been the worst golfing experience I have ever had in my life. Their water pump allegedly broke and the entire course with the exception of the greens was dead. The fairways looked like a parking lot. I thought there was no way this course would ever recover.
Fast forward to August of 2020. This is the best course i have played in New Mexico this year. The course is in phenomenal condition and the course manager should be promoted for the change he has made. The layout is fun and the conditions were pristine. This is absolutely a must play course in New Mexico.

I took your suggestion on electric carts, we found they only get 18 holes in which I could work with. The big problem is the electric supply is questionable and if we have a outage during the night the next day the fleet would not function I thank you for your suggestion and wanted to pass on the reason I will stay with gas. We plan on fleet replacement this spring though. Tom Velarde
