Just telling our story in Itapoa!
The tourist information guide in Puerto Quito send us to the reserve with a taxi that was "already payed" as we heard at the cellphone but arrived there we had to pay it...
Then the women that live there told us that we can walk around and discover the garden, also use the kitchen, so it looks easy until I had the owner by phone that tell me we had to pay 8 dollars each to walk on the forest, and 5 dollars to use the kitchen and 20 dollars for a really basic room with cold water... I'm a tree surgeon, the trees was cut by a beginner and they were nothing different than in a simple forest exepting that you have to pay for every little things ;-)
We didn't took a 80 dollars day tour, this may be change something! We felt like "walking dollars"

As a group of four students, czech biologist Jan and our guide Raúl we had a very educating but also intense tour in the ecuadorian part of the rainforest Chocó.

The tour started in Puerto Quito, where Raúl picked us up and took us to his house just a few minutes outside town.
The next day we got up early to start our ~8h trek into the rainforest where we spent three nights in tents on a wooden platform Raúl built himself.
The two days in the middle of the jungle consisted of walks to fantastic spots and talks about different aspects of the environmental importance and ecological exploitation of the forest by big companies.
We could easily see that Raúl is highly interested in educating groups about these topics and spends his life working on projects like the Itapoa Reserve!

Thank you, Raúl! We had a great time and learned a lot of things we didn’t even think about before this trip.

I highly recommend spending a couple of days in the Chocó with Raúl and spread his word afterwards!

We've spent three months traveling trough Ecuador and made a lot of wonderful tours into the national parks and the beautiful nature. But the trip to the Itapoa reserve was the most incredible one and is still in our minds and hearts after coming home months ago.

We arrived in the house of Raul Nieto in Puerto Quito. The house is surrounded by a green landscape, but its also rustic and simple. We decided to do the tour with a group of some kids from NY. The Itapoa project has a cooperation with an institution there and every year there are coming a very small group of kids and their teachers to explore the beautiful and endangered nature there.

Even though there were a lot tings left to be organized when we arrived we had a very warm welcome and felt really fast as a part of the group.

The tour starts very early and as we drove to the starting point we could see all the massive oil plantation that have been built after the deforestation.

After breakfast, we've started walking through the changing landscape. We thought we have seen a primary forest in Ecuador before but Raul told us the differences and as we kept on going we could see it with our own eyes. The walk is quite long and muddy but so beautiful.

We slept in a rustic camp, on a wooden platform in tents. We took a bath in the river next to the farm. So be prepared! ;-) The trip has less to do with a touristical offer it is more an expedition. So all the people who want to have some adventure and want to explore the real nature - you are right here!

But all the time we have been so closed to the nature. Raul and Jaime explained us the environmental changes of the region, the endangered animals that are living here. We've made tours to explore the wildlife, also in the night to see all these beautiful glass frogs and snakes.

To make it clear: I was really afraid of snakes and scorpions and so on. But I've joined the night walk and ran into the woods to see a snake. Why? Because I felt safe. They are experts and know what to do. I've never felt in danger or insecure because they also give you important instructions what to do and how to behave.

There are a lot more things to tell what we have been experienced there but all in on: Beautiful, originally nature, Endangered species, a bigger understanding about the environmental influences on this Rainforest, great adventures that I've never expected, getting to know to incredible persons like Raul, Jaime and Derek, good food (Thanks to the Marias) as well as the funniest moments in our whole journey.

We will come back. We won't stop to support the project!

We read in the Lonely Planet about this reserve and wanted to go there to learn more about the nature and culture of the region. And we sure got it! Raul picked us up from the bus station and immediately started to tell about his diverse projects: the rainforest, coffee, chocolate, animals, music. To much to tell about here. And, you should go visit yourself! It's really worth it, and the views from the house are magnificent. Great for bird watchers too.
