Toxic mining waste from the mining history
ago de 2021
Interesting part of Butte, Anaconda mining history. Berkeley pit shows the amount of work and effort it is taking to clean up the toxic waste of the mining of years ago. Interesting how they have noise makers to keep birds, and wild animals from wandering onto the water of the pit.

Whitewashing a toxic legacy
set de 2021 • Casais
Viewing the Berkeley Pit and reading the displays and listening to the recordings you would think the mining companies were environmental stewards and great corporate citizens. After all, they say, they razed whole communities to make way for their environmental scars and, we are told, the citizens *loved* being displaced. And then, one photograph actually shows a gorgeous classic building being buried in "waste" material.
There is little negative reference to the highly acidic water that has built up in the pit, only that that the levels shouldn't be a concern until 2023 (????!!!!).
You would think all is good here in the "pit." I thought, rather, I was seeing Dante's fourth circle of hell: the one related to avarice.

Sobering Visit to a Toxic Environmental Site
ago de 2021
Well worth a visit to see the environmental devastation caused by short-sighted decisions of the past. A cautionary example of what can happen when there are no environmental protections.

A fascinating but sobering piece of Butte history.
ago de 2021
This is a viewing platform of the Berkeley Pit - a remnant from open pit mining days. There are several information plaques at the viewing platform that describe the events that took place to form the Berkeley Pit. There are also descriptions of current efforts to clean the water and maintain the Pit. It is a unique part of the history of Butte with a sobering environmental situation that is interesting to learn about. I feel everyone who visits Butte should see this place.

Cheap fascination
jul de 2021
The sheer size and acknowledged toxicity of this massive mining pit is almost awe-inspiring. Nearly impossible to imagine the millions of tons of ore and scrim that were excavated to make this unnatural lake that's nearly a mile deep. Equally stunning is the astounding volume of water presently being treated (and released into river as clean water!). And just to prove how intrepid this copper mining mecca is, you can see the nearby mining works just east of the pit that surely will create another pit of deadly slurry as the years roll by!

Amazing example of mining.
out de 2020
The Berkeley Pit is awe-inspiring as an example of what humans can do when they want to extract important minerals from the ground. If you value mining, this is inspirational. If you no not, it is frightening. People need to think about what is involved in making the devices they use daily in their kitchens and offices and come to grips with how the resources are extracted. Either embrace mining or stop using pretty much everything technological! The reason it is not rate five is that it is so difficult to find a place to see its full extent.

Huge mining pit.

Must see to realize how large this pit is. We saw two eagles flying near the edge of the pit and they looked so tiny against the vastness of the water.

I stopped twice - one eastbound and then again a few days later when I was westbound. Always closed. Maybe it's the COVID-19 that is causing this.

Bacino idrico creato per sbaglio in una miniera aperta
out de 2020 • Casais

Butte, Montana has the feel of mid western west belt city. There is a lot to see and do here. The mining museum is really neat. Driving through Butte feels like driving through Pittsburgh, and I say that in a good way.
