I cannot recommend Ely outfitting company any higher than a plus plus!

Like so many of the former guests, I was hooked from the first phone call with Theo.

I was so excited that I called my dearest friends in LA and told him what I was doing and within two minutes they said they wanted to join me!!

We felt so lucky when Theo called about a week before to tell us that she was our guide and while I’m sure all the guys at the company are great, Theo was beyond all expectations!

From answering all our questions as active “seniors” To the wonderful equipment in organizational pre-trip and
Excellent food enhanced only by The lifting of the campfire ban, lucky us And some unexpected fresh produce to boot!!

The route was thrilling, gorgeous and challenging… A perfect combination improved Only by Theo’s incredible competency and encouragement. We change the route a little bit midway and never felt we missed a beat.

Truly, all three of us have been adventuring for nearly 7 decades and this is among if not the top of all of our journeys.

Do not pass go or think about it another minute If you are thinking about a BWAC trip, elite outfitting company is the only choice :-)

EOC was outstanding in helping us plan our trip route, menu with dietary restrictions, and once we arrived in Ely we were impressed with their comfortable bunkhouse, their thorough 1.5 hour orientation, during which all questions were answered (thank you Amy), and the efficiency of their entire operation. I can’t overemphasize how friendly and customer service oriented their staff is. We did a 4 day trip to knife lake with Moose lake entry point. Motorboat tow each way was perfect. Food was delicious and all of their equipment was first rate. Hot showers at end of trip were appreciated. Overall, the experience with EOC was terrific and I highly recommend them.

What an amazing company... from my first contact until we said goodbye when our trip ended.! Through the course of our planning, I spoke with many people arranging for our trip...everyone was pleasant, knowledgeable and willing to answer all of my questions. They responded quickly and worked with our group (of 2 old grandmas and 2 young grandsons) to provide us a wonderful experience. Our guide, Dave, was awesome and our "Junior Guide, Austin" is well on his way to being an A+ guide. The food was great and the scenery was beautiful! Our boys were full of stories and are ready to come back next summer. A big thanks to Dave, Austin, and Ely Outfitting for making this a great experience!

Thanks so much! I appreciate hearing that you found our staff to be knowledgeable and our canoeing/camping equipment great-- and especially that Austin helped you find primo fishing spots and campsites for your BWCAW trip.

I really wanted to love it! First, I couldn't tell if our guide lady Theo liked us or hated us. I say this for many reasons. She was like a sour patch kid, seemed sour and was nice.

The food, what a BIG disappointment. And what a lack of communication surrounding that. I'll be brief. The wild fires this summer really affected the food and it seemed every other day I was getting an email that stated I would be charged more due to the fires and for the "extras". I never got an email saying the food quality was going down and I would be charged less. They have pictures on their website of people eating steaks and baked potato's and raving about the food, that was not the case. I actually got a .96$ (I know this because I saw them at Walmart, I took a PIC) package of instant potato's , on top of all the MRE potato's. We ordered smores and we got whole Heresy candy bars instead. I haven't eaten a whole candy bar since I was 10 years old, how odd. And no communication around the change. Would it have been so hard to add marshmallows and gram crackers, we paid for it. We didn't have to heat them up. Oh and now for the processed oil in a tub. I have NEVER eaten Parkay, yeah Parkay Butter, I didn't even know it was still made. It was so nasty, stuck to my hands, there was a perinate ring on all the dishes. I can't imagine what it did to my insides. I can't believe it was Parkay Butter. We got a random amount of salt and paper. No paper towls, or "a" hand towel to wipe the grease off from the Parkay Butter (I understand we are in the Boundary Waters but you have sent me with pure oil.) I could go on......... I could have packed better food. I didn't because I trusted in them and they failed. The food was the most expensive portion of this trip and it was such a disappointment. I feel there could have been better options and better communication about changes.

Now let's talk about the thing they gave us to sleep on. What a joke that was. An outfitter buys in bulk for mass use. Their top concern is not quality and comfort, it is to withstand mass use. Google light weight Canoes, you will not see Wenonah listed. If we had better sleeping pads I think it all would have been better.

I did reach out to the owner to attempt to express my feelings, he did return my call several times but he had a gift of calling while I was in a workout class or driving. I did return his call but after I thought about it, what was he really going to do. Nothing so what is the point.

But this is just my opinion. Take it as you want.

First off, thanks for emailing us after your trip and saying, “Over all it was very good. Thank you!” Thank you also for providing your feedback and letting us know about your concerns. We apologize that our services did not satisfy all of your expectations for your self-guided two-night trip to Slim Lake. We set a high standard for ourselves and are truly sorry to hear that standard was not met in your experience. Your successful Boundary Waters trip is our top priority. I’ve been reaching out by phone and email and left my personal cell number multiple times over the last several weeks. I hope to connect and talk about your concerns and make this right. We do our best to make sure you don’t have any negative surprises on trail. We take the time to set out your trail meals and go over the menu items individually with you so you can see everything we have packed for you in advance. We also carefully set out and review your outfitting items to ensure you are familiar with the gear we’ve packed in your outfitting package. Occasional fire bans instituted by the USFS, like in place during your trip, sometimes make cooking the first night fresh trail meals more challenging. We typically pack baked potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil for roasting on a fire, but fire bans prevent that and we find instant mashed potatoes to be the best backup for a wilderness trip. During a fire ban, roasting marshmallows on a campfire isn’t possible so only the chocolate bars were packed. You preferred to have the marshmallows and graham crackers packed even though a campfire wasn’t allowed, and I apologize if the option for adding those wasn’t provided when we went over your food with you. There may be some confusion regarding your concern about price increases for your trip, and I hope to talk with you to provide clarification. We have not increased prices this summer. I’ve reviewed all of the emails related to your reservation and I do not see any price increase references. We don’t want pricing surprises for our clients, so we provide clear pricing for all of our services on our website, and email potential clients itemized pricing to review before paying a trip deposit. Our team takes immense pride in doing our best to help our clients have successful Boundary Waters experiences. I’m very sorry and apologize that your first trip to the Boundary Waters wasn’t what you expected.

Our party of 4 seniors had a most incredible trip thanks to the crew at Ely outfitters, ( 7 days)
The package they supplied was perfect, Kevlar canoes , tents , food pots pans air mattresses
The list goes on.
We paddled about 30 miles to the Canadian border, Although we entered Moose river north ironically
Moose we’re not seen however Did enjoy the bears, pine marten ,trumpeter swans ,deer, muskrat ,snowshoe hares,
Loons , mink ,snapping turtles who ate our walleye off our stringer.

The advice they offered was priceless as we were from both Florida and Colorado. Hats off to these guys and gals
We would highly recommend these fine people. July 1 thru 7 2021

The people we encountered (Minnesotans ) during our journey very warm friendly and welcoming.

It’s been 25 years since my wife and I have been back to BWCA. We are in our mid 50’s and wanted a full outfitting experience. These guys are the best and excel at customer service. Regular pre-trip emails kept us well informed as our trip approached. They knew what we needed more than we knew what we needed since much has changed since we last visited BWCA. All equipment clean and worked well. Covid protocols in place. Package included food which in most cases was more than my wife and I could eat. Food is generally easy to prepare with detailed instructions. We had a great experience and highly recommend this outfitter.

I am from Sweden and visited Ely and the Boundary Waters in late September 2019. I had a few days to spare and more or less spontaiously decided to go on a canoe trip starting from Moose Lake. The Ely Outfitting Company quickly gave me everything I needed, frpm a kevlar canoe on the roof of my rental car to a bag full of food and the bear safty equipment. I think it didn't take me more than one and a half hour before I was back on the road heading for the water. Once I reached the portage on the other side of Moose Lake I was so happy. I had everything I needed for a few days in the great outdoors.

From start to finish Ely Outfitting Company & Boundary Waters Guide Service is there for you from picking your route to picking you up at the drop-off point after your trip.
