My wife and I hiked six miles of trails in the Sand Lakes Quiet Area and came away unimpressed and disappointed. The hiking is monotonous, almost solely pine trees with virtually no scenic beauty or variety at all. The lakes we passed by were pretty, yes, but there are others in the area with greater interest and more to offer.
Also, we were hiking in prime wildflower season and there were virtually none to be found there. Oddly, too, around the lakes we found few waterfowl or other birds in the area. Wildlife consisted of a couple of squirrels.
There are so many other, more interesting and more impressive options in and around Traverse City. So, unless you really want to hike somewhere simply because "I've never been there before" (as we did), you're best to look elsewhere.

Close by, just north of Traverse City, beautiful nature area with miles of well marked trails for summer and winter fun. Have hiked, snowshoed and explored many times.

This is a really nice state park for those that enjoy nature and solitude. The lack of motor sounds is wonderful and you don't know how ubiquitous they are in your life.

There is some camping allowed but it is limited. The trails are great for bikes or walking

The small lakes are brimming with life and the people there were friendly and like minded.

But they are high and not that often. The SLQA is one of the peaceful places in northern Michigan. There are miles of well maintained and well marked hiking trails covering the 4 square miles and over 7 lakes. Hikers, joggers, and skiers (in the winter of course) can enjoy a bit of nature, wildlife and outdoor recreation without needing to listen to ORV's, cars or motorcycles. Now if they could just stop the passenger jets :)
You can park in the parking lot at the northwest corner or camp at Guernsey Lake state forest campground on the east side. Grab your hiking boots and your camera. My last trip saw Loon, turkey, deer, and a wide variety of songbirds and ducks. Ohh and the Huckle Berries (trail point 12) were ripe and plentiful.

Took my grandson and my dog to check out the area and we had a great walk to lake 1. We both were tired by the time we got back to the car.

This beautiful quiet area is perfect for hiking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, or running. Each time of year has something different to offer. Since motorized vehicles aren't allowed, your peaceful hike won't be disturbed by motorcycle or snowmobile noises. There are plenty of different trails if you want to stay all day, or short loops that allow for just an hour or two. You'll come across small lakes and ponds throughout.
Be aware that many people take dogs off the leash, which can be annoying if they're not well trained.
There are park fee envelopes available. Please use them to help with upkeep!
Take your own water.

My Husband and friends have enjoyed this for years, It is part of the Pere Marquette State Forest. No Motorized vehicles allowed, wildlife, hike, bike, or cross country ski for hours upon end. Easily reached by Supply Road go north on Broomhead Rd. approximately 7 miles on right hand side. From M 72 take Broomhead Rd. South, pay attention it jogs a couple times, approx. 7 miles south on the left hand side. Sand Lakes Road is the North Boundry.

Marked trails take you through thick woods to little lakes that are fishable. Some decent hills to ascend and lots of squirrels and deer
