I would highly recommend. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Sean our guide was fun and great at getting us down the river. The sites with all the snow were beautiful. It was snowing while we rafted also so it was pretty.

It has been on my bucket list to do a winter raft ride. It was so much fun! The weather was perfect - lots of snow on the ground, a sunny January day with unusual 40 degree temps. The Sturgeon River, we learned is fast but calm, no rapids. It was not scary, but just plain exciting. Our guide, Isabel, did a great job guiding our raft down the river. She gave us great instructions on how and when to paddle. She stopped along the way at a little island and let us spend some time looking for Petoskey stones and other treasures along the shore. There were a total of five people in our raft-my husband and I, and a mother and son, plus our guide Isabel. I am so happy to have done this winter raft ride! I highly recommend it.

I've tubed this river many times and know the obstacles and dangers. We were warned the river was high and fast and still chose to go. Thats on us. In our group of 35, we had 3 people almost drown, with one of them being submerged for 1 minute and having breathing problems upon surfacing. All had life jackets on. 9 of us chose to get out of the river early as it was too dangerous. We walked back to the starting point along the river. I tried calling the office multiple times with my call dropping each time. We left our tube and raft at our exit point as it was too heavy to carry through the woods and We were concerned about needing medical attention. We flagged one of the shuttles down and rode back to shop. Upon arrival, our shuttle driver was yelled at by the owner Scott for picking us up (the shuttle driver was absolutely amazing and very concerned - he spoke broken English and I didn't get his name but he was the best!). Scott then proceeded to yell at the person who was submerged for 1 min for leaving her tube and reduced this person to tears. The other near drowning person was yelled at for losing her tube in order to grab a tree to stay above water due to the current pushing her under. She was reduced to tears. At one point Scott said to the employees "stop talking about this, I don't need more people to find out what happened"
I know we signed a waiver stating the dangers and lost equipment and fees. I'm ok with all of that. Our group knew all the things we signed for so we don't need that lecture.
Have some human compassion and understanding though to people who literally just had near death experiences instead of reducing them to tears and shaming them.
The river was way too high and way too fast to send anyone out that day. Two minutes into the trip I knew it was a bad idea. I've been on the river multiple times and know it's challenging but have never had it that fast with that strong of currents. As we were walking past homes on the river multiple residents made the comment how "that company" should be ashamed for putting people on the river as it was too dangerous.
I've always had a great experience here, but unfortunately will not be back. Not because of your rules or waiver or fees ... because of your lack of compassion, lack of respect for human life, poor customer service, and treating your employee like dirt in front of everyone for doing the right thing. Please Do better.

We were looking to do something different with the kids and rented two side by sides for the guided tour. The online registration went smoothly, the safety gear fit well. The side by side vehicles were not completely trash free when we got in them and the instruction they gave us expected us to already have experience trail driving. Dave did a great job on the trail and when we got turned around and stopped as he had instructed. The group came back to find us. The trails were not too challenging. The family enjoyed the ride. We would do it again. Especially riding through the water and mud.

Used Big Bear Adventure to spend the day on the Sturgeon River. We had ages 13-50. We rented Tube Trackers and went on the 2 hour trip. There are some definite obstacles on the fast moving river, but they are totally maneuverable especially if you are used to kayaking. It was a great trip, with many spots to pull off and look for Petoskey stones and have a picnic. After seeing people on the regular tubes, we were very happy to choose the tube trackers. Tubers were getting stuck in the trees and other obstacles, but we were able to paddle around them.

We reserved online, checked in at Big Bear. They had us drive our car to the end location at Burt Lake State Park across the street (you need to purchase a state park sticker if you don’t have one) and then picked us up to drive to our drop in location. Highly recommend!

It’s fantastic that you found them easy to maneuver and enjoyed the scenery and activities. We appreciate the tips about the park sticker and the shuttle service. We hope to see you again soon for more river adventures! Thanks again for taking the time to review us!

We have been going putting putt golfing here for 20 plus years. Tonight we went and got there at 9. We like to go just when it starts getting dark. There were two larger family groups in front of us, there were also 10 of us. At 9:45 a girl with a russian accent comes out and stated they are closing in 15 minutes. We have never experienced this before. They always just stayed open until everyone was done golfing then they would close the course. We will no longer be golfing there again!

Thank you for sharing your feedback, Michael. We’re disheartened to hear a negative review after 20 plus years of exceptional service. We’re sorry for the misunderstanding—our staff member was informing guests that the general store would be closing in 15 minutes, not the golf course. We regret any confusion this may have caused. We strive to accommodate all our guests and will review our policies to ensure better communication in the future. We also want to address your comment about the staff member’s accent. Julia is a college student from Ukraine on a J1 work and travel visa, who happens to be an exceptionally hard worker, kind, and smart individual (she knows 4 languages and studying international law!). We value diversity and aim to provide respectful and inclusive service to everyone. We appreciate your long-time support and hope to have the chance to better serve you again in the future.

The blonde girl at the desk was awesome. She did a good job explaining everything. My girlfriend and I signed up to kayak for 1.5 hours. We sat around for 45 minutes waiting for one of the guys to drive us over to the launching spot. They had about 8 people working that day, but only 1 driver which was pretty sad. The guy that drove us seemed stoned AF. Then he dropped us off and didn't help us bring the kayaks down to the launching spot. We had to launch ourselves, which caused one of us to tip over right away. The river was fun (and dangerous) but it was a great challenge. When we were done, there was no staff waiting to collect the kayaks. We had to leave them there and then walk back to check in at the front desk.

Literally anyone can go and steal a kayak that was left at the park... then what happens, does the person who rented the kayak get fined?

Staff (expect the blonde girl who knew what she was doing) was god awful.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the challenging nature of the river trip and that our team member at the desk provided excellent information—she’ll be thrilled to hear your positive comments. We want to assure you that we hold our staff to high standards and do not condone any unprofessional behavior. It’s important to us that our team provides excellent service, and we regret that your experience did not reflect this. Regarding the kayak process, it is standard procedure for equipment to be left at the landing point for retrieval. Since the rental includes a shuttle rather than a guided trip, it’s designed for you to start and end at your convenience. Our team is often busy assisting other customers and shuttling back and forth, which might explain why they weren't immediately visible, but they work hard to ensure everything is managed efficiently, including the retrieval of equipment. We appreciate your observations and will use them to improve our service. Thank you for sharing your experience.

We booked a Tandem Kayak for a 1.5 hour lazy River nature float. First, after loading up the Kayak the young guy drove us up several miles & just dropped the Kayak & us off on the side of road. My husband had to carry the Kayak down stairs alone since I couldn’t even lift it. Fortunately, these young guys, who were going tubing helped him & me into the Kayak. The river was narrow, twisting and fast with many logs, branches in water & hanging trees. The current slammed us into many obstacles and we flipped the Kayak after slamming into a log twice. We had many cuts & bruises! It was a harrowing experience. When we got to the end My husband had to drag the Kayak up another flight of stairs & no signs which way to go.They gave us a map which was soaked & unreadable. We stopped a bicyclist for directions. We saw some birds but we had to focus on survival! There was no staff support!

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about your difficult experience. It’s important to note that our literature clearly describes the river as fast-moving and challenging, it is NOT a lazy river. Nowhere on our website or our premises do our trips ever describe that our trips are on a lazy river. We in fact say the opposite. Your description of your experience is also nearly identical and almost verbatim to the waiver that you signed and the safety orientation that you are given by our staff during the sign-up process. We absolutely NEVER, EVER tote this river as a "leisurely afternoon float" or a "relaxing excursion"! 'We have a 4 ft x 10 ft sign on our building that describes the Sturgeon River with a large "WARNING! This is a Natural River, NOT a Waterpark or "LAZY" river!" That is then followed by several bullet points including: "Fastest and most challenging river in Michigan's Lower Peninsula", "Not whitewater, but exciting and challenging with its quick and tricky current", "Numerous sharp turns, narrow passages, low over-hanging branches, leaning trees and log jams", "It's up to you and/or your partner(s) to navigate the challenges and obstacles", and "Any river adventure will involve inherent risks and dangers, and can be physically demanding". Under "Be a Responsible Paddler", there are also several bullet points including: "Don't overestimate your abilities - think of the least experienced member in your group", "If you have not been on this river before, we HIGHLY recommend shorter trips!", and "Wear your lifejacket at all times". Not only do we have that huge sign, but then our staff verbally tells everyone before signing up that this is NOT a lazy river, but adventurous. The warnings and things you described in your comment are also DETAILED in our "hold harmless" liability waiver that you and everyone in your group signed prior to ever paying for your trip or heading to the river. There are 4 paragraphs under "Acknowledgment of Risk" on our waivers including one which says "I understand that on the Sturgeon River in some places there are deep holes (over my head), whirlpools, and a strong undercurrent; that there are some very sharp turns and narrow passages due to fallen trees, rocks, and other obstacles". The Sturgeon River can be a very fun and exciting adventure, especially great on sunny, HOT days. We do our best to inform every guest about the river and we have thousands of happy guests every year since starting these trips in 1980. We understand this might not have been what you may have initially expected upon arrival, and we apologize for any confusion. The river can indeed be demanding, and we’re sorry you didn’t find the support you needed. During the check-in process and the waivers, you sign, you are informed of the conditions of our rivers, trip expectations, and the landing points. It is part of our safety protocol speech to inform guests of these elements, and we often discourage guests from going on kayaking trips if they do not have kayaking experience as we are aware that our trips can be more advanced. This is also stated in our safety briefings, literature, and waivers. We would not recommend anyone to go on a trip if they were unable to lift/carry their equipment as well. Michigan has a lot of slower, easier rivers that are also beautiful, but might be more suitable in the future. We’ll review your comments to see how we can better assist guests in these situations.
