Worth the Narrow Drive into the Park
set de 2020
We visited Susquehanna State Park to walk along the water and visit the historic sites in the Rock Run area. There is a pamphlet on the internet with information about the historical sites and there are historical markers as well. The trail is easy to approach and not "difficult" as mentioned on some websites. It is a good place to walk around safely during Covid times and then drive into Havre de Grace to see the lighthouse, enjoy ice cream or a meal, or just walk by the water.

Pack a lunch, bring water
ago de 2020 • Amigos
It’s a few miles off of 95 south so it’s extremely easy to get to. It’s also located a couple miles from the scenic town of Havre de Grace which offers delicious seafood and wonderful local ice cream.

The state park has ample parking, lots of rustic buildings and an overgrown walkway along the Susquehanna River. There are a bunch of trails to navigate some in the forest and some along the roads. There is also a boat launch nearby for those who have small boats.

Hard to reach, but trails and swimming saved the day
jul de 2020
Very hard to reach through some harrowing narrow country roads. And the sites themselves are a teeny claustrophobic. But once you got on a trail and headed for the creek or river you were richly rewarded. We hiked down to the creek and had a great time swimming with kids and dog.

Hint - Ignore the warning that the trail that jogs right is “very difficult”. Actually a more direct route to the water. And you are rewarded with walking by a Maryland Trophy Tree.

OK camping
jun de 2020
We stopped here on our way to PA. Campsites were not as level as other parks and there were rowdy guests that no one seemed to check on. We went over and told them to tone it down which they did for awhile. Nice park but due to Covid places were closed. River was nice to view.

Mason-Dixon Trail Hike
mai de 2020 • Família
We came to hike the scenic Mason-Dixon trail along the Susquehanna. The first 3.5 miles are flat, parallel to the river. Starting at the railroad bridge, the first mile is a well-traveled wooded path followed by a much wider rail/bike trail to the dam. Despite covid, it’s moderately used but there was plenty of room to avoid others.

At the dam, the trail starts heading finally into the woods and becomes sparsely used. We walked a pleasant 7+ miles. Good for kids and adults of all ages. Great scenery - birds, water, flowers.

Easy weekend camping trip from Philadelphia
out de 2019 • Família
My family loves car camping and we were invited to join two other families for a two night trip. This was our first time to visit Susquehanna state park and we were pleasantly surprised by it.

The sites we reserved were reasonably sized, though we would have preferred a small gravel bed for our tent (there were a few large sharp rocks that we couldn’t avoid). The bathrooms were clean and playground was nearby, so our kids found it easy to get there and back. There was a place to wash dishes, but I wish the hot water was hotter. The park staff were very friendly and responded to requests for information and addressed our needs.

There are a several hiking and biking trails available and they are moderately challenging. Be sure to visit the mill with working water wheel and milling stone. It was such an interesting look at a historical era.

Basically, the kids loved it so I’m sure we will return in the spring.

A somewhat hidden world along the river
set de 2019 • Amigos
Friends in the historical society talked of Lapidum, but it always seemed a mystery. Then on a visit to Havre de Grace, I was told to drive north along the river to find the forest, park and Lapidum. A very pleasant surprise. Fortunately there was only the rare passing car, so we could get out and examine the forest. The grist mill provided a major attraction, but exploring around it one learned of an old canal and old railway tracks. We eventually emerged in farmland close to Darlington. Beautiful river views all along the way. Definitely a hidden treasure.

This large park features multiple venues. It’s like someone took a bunch of stuff and just put it here for you to enjoy. See the different trades (joinery, blacksmithing, grain storage, the classroom, a cannery and more) from the 19th and 20th centuries. This place also features some live chickens that seem to have the run of the place, a gift shop, and some incredible views of the river valley.

Then - take a trail about .9 miles, past the apiaries, and you run into the stone home of a former confederate general, complete with stone spring house, a dam, and a stone mill that still functions. The mill is like 4 stories full of great machinery from yesteryear. Once you are done with that, take a walk along the beautiful river. This place is just amazing.
