This is a must -see stop for anyone interested in History, literature, poetry and historic preservation. The home has been amazingly preserved by the family in a lived-in condition prior to gifted to the Maine Historical Society. Over 90% of the items in the house are original from the great poet. This is an amazing chance to visit the home of a giant of literature.

The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Very helpful too! We arrived too late for the tour and the staff suggested we do the self guided tour using the museum. We did and loved it! Easy to navigate and the docents added to the tour with a couple of interesting facts and stories. Highly recommend for any American literature fan!

Three generations called this home before it and 98% of its furnishings became a museum. I would have benefited from a guided rather than self-guided tour.

The website for this home is frustratingly lacking in visitor information, but don’t let that discourage you. Call to find out the hours of operation. The home is tucked right in the middle of downtown Portland, between modern buildings. You buy your tickets at the visitor center/museum next door. Parking is at meters on the street. The tours are self-guided, but you can download an app and there are docents on each floor. The home contains 98% of the original furnishings and belongings and the home has been remarkably conserved. The docents were enthusiastic and friendly. The woman who manned the gift shop not so much. We were in the process of buying tickets when I asked for the restrooms and she snapped we couldn’t use them unless we purchased tickets. Really? She was very put out by questions. I wish the museum attached to the gift shop would have had more information about the Wadsworths and Longfellows, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in particular, but it didn’t. Longfellow grew up here, but I didn’t completely understand how he came to live in his grandfather’s home or the family relationships and learned nothing about Longfellow or his life. I had to resort to Wikipedia when I got home. Still, the home and small gardens are worth a visit.

Fantastic tour of this historic home. It was a self guided tour that had audio capabilities but the docents that were in the house offered amazing stories about the history of the home and the family. They helped to make the tour amazing! Really enjoyed our visit here and learning about this home as well as how well the home has been maintained/preserved.

Call before you go. We went here at 2:45 on a Monday afternoon and they would not let us in. They said a group had shown up unexpectedly from NYC and rather than let us go to the gardens first and then go in the house, they just told us we could come back in an hour. Disappointing.

We visited here on a Saturday around 1:00pm. It was not very busy at all. You have to get the tickets next door at the Maine Historical Society. There was a “mask required” sign, but my husband and I didn’t have any and nobody said anything to us, so we got our tickets and downloaded the self-guided tour app. We were very pleased with the whole experience. Even though they only offered the self-guided tour, there were 2 docents in the house who were very knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions and to tell stories about the family. After you tour the house, you get to walk through a clothing display with lots of fashions covering different decades. Don’t miss the garden out back! It was lovely! There is also a nice gift shop. Oh, and clean restrooms! Between the tour and a little shopping, we were probably there a little over an hour.

One of the things that makes this house unique is that the building and lovely grounds are totally surrounded by modern buildings in the heart of downtown Portland. You can escape modernity by immersing yourself in the grounds and all the antique furnishings. We were lucky to have Vivian as the tour guide. She was well/spoken but not too verbose and had lots of information to bring the house to life as it once was when Henry and his family lived here. Parking can be a problem but there is a public lot around the corner (west side I think). Don’t forget to walk through the gardens in back.

I had booked the 10am (self-guided) tour back in June for an October visit. Since I was early, I checked out the garden which is open to the public. It’s a long, thin, shade garden that’s lovely, inviting, and peaceful. For the tour of the house, they have an app that you download. It was very well done and made visiting the house quite interesting with all its original furnishings and décor. It took about 20 or 25 minutes to complete the tour. I finished up with a visit to their gallery for about 30 minutes. $15, but $13 for me as a senior.

Our visit to the Wadsworth-Longfellow House was made extra special by the extraordinarily knowledgeable docent, James Horrigan who was there to answer all of our questions as we toured this historic home. His enthusiasm for the history of this house and the family who occupied it is unbounded. We only wish he would have been able to give us a full-length guided tour and recommend that he and the other docents be able to do that soon. Our group consisted of myself and husband visiting from Martha's Vineyard and our two friends who live in Portland.

Has anyone been to both the Longfellow House and the Victoria Mansion in Portland, Maine? If so, how do they compare? If we have time to visit only one, which one would you recommend? Any insight on how to decide between these 2 house museums would be appreciated!
